The only problem is people will try to use you for tech support if the shit you sell them don't work in their configuration even though it worked 100% when they bought it from you.

Yea, I sold a PS3 on CL a while ago, and about 3 months after I sold it, the guy calls me, pissed, expecting me to refund him the money and take the PS3 back because it stopped reading discs.

Screw that, wasn't my problem anymore. Told him to fuck off, and apparently he got the message because I haven't heard from him since.

I love CL!

I buy disposable cars on there. Last year I bought a car for $700, put roughly $300 over the past year and it just died. I sold it for $225. Net cost of just over $700 for a year's worth of car.

I just bought another one for $1k. Its fine the way it is but it could use about $300 worth of work to make it very decent. I am thinking about waiting until it warms up and doing the work myself for ~$150.

I've bought and sold way more stuff on CL than I ever did on egay. I have not had a bad experience yet.

I posted an ad the other day on Craigslist and got this generic response from a @yahoo.com address:

hello

im interested in this

Stupid me, I replied to this e-mail and I got a Yahoo AutoResponse back:

Dont sell this!

Just wanted to let you know that I was selling a few things on CL just like you. I ended up realizing a lot of people get ripped off, its over-all NOT SAFE anymore to meet people from craigslist. A friend of mine told me about an amazing website and said I should check it out so I did. I made about 4000$ ast month. Its great and the has helped me and friends so much. I'm doing better than my current fulltime job and this is just extra money! If I can do it, you can. Visit <web site removed>.

If you need any help let me know! I have no problem giving tips and tricks that I have learned so far.

Good luck with your sale.
Fuckers!

This is why I prefer dealing with businesses, just less overall hassle. I know that I'm paying more and can still have inconveniences, I just hate dealing with people.

My girlfriend and I actually got held up about a year ago when meeting someone on Craigslist to buy their LCD. I pulled up, he looked sketchy already, but I tried being non-discriminatory. We walked up to him, he kept asking if I brought the cash which raised a red flag right away. I told him I just wanted to see the TV first and that I'd go to an ATM after seeing it (I actually had the several hundred dollars in my hidden pocket, but had to think fast).

He pulls out a gun and put it to my stomach. I looked down; yup, a gun alright. I gave him the $20 that was in my wallet. My girlfriend gave him $3 in her purse. He actually just walked away after that, not asking for more, not taking my necklace, etc.

Deal in the daylight, at a public place. In my situation, it's hard for anyone to bring a giant LCD with them, but make sure to not bring any cash with you and make that known beforehand.

Did you call the police? I assume this was at his house since it was a TV, right?

This is why I keep a loaded pistol in the small of my back when I deal with Craigslist people. Call me paranoid, but even if you're paranoid, you only need to be right once.

Yup, called the police as soon as I got a hold of a landline. They came to my house and really didn't care too much about the incident, but at least I filed a report.

It was actually at an apartment complex that was near an overpass. In retrospect, it was a dumb move to actually walk towards him, but in my mind I kept telling myself that nothing was wrong even though there were glaring signs that hinted otherwise (how he was dressed, changed phone numbers on me, asked for cash more than once).

I've been trading on Craigslist for several years without any paranoia and this is the first incident of this kind. It really makes you cautious about meeting up with people.

Hate to sound like a prick, but I'm always paranoid dealing with strangers and prepare accordingly. I've passed up a lot of good deals that way, though.

That's not prickish at all and no offense taken either. I was extremely upset with myself for putting my gf in harm's way. It was an incident where I felt I was living vicariously through myself, if that makes sense. It's like I knew what was going to happen, but went through with it anyway.

I made a few evening CL deals I probably should have walked away from.

Just recently, I went to buy a computer and my wife INSISTED I take a friend with me. I am glad I did. If he was not with me, I would have kept driving. With him there, I felt more comfortable and got a great deal.

I now try to do all business in the daytime, but with work, it is hard to do unless I limit all my deals to the weekends.

So I currently have the following CL posting:

"Mac iBook 500MHz PowerPC G3 384mb RAM 9.37gb HD - $150"

I receive the following e-mail (this is the entire e-mail):

I guess it gets the point across, but my high school english teacher is spinning in her grave.

Yeah this is why I always have a loaded handgun with me when I show up to a craigslist deal. I wouldn't pull it over a few bucks though. I'd probably do just what you did even if I had the gun with me.

I live in the San Fernando Valley and work in the Westside (West L.A.), so, though I list my items in the "los angeles craigslist > SF valley" section, I list the "location" as "<my city> (and Westside LA)"

Today, I have the following exchange:

Buyer: "I am near usc can u meet me around there"

Me: "I can meet you today at the Starbucks on the corner of <intersection> in <my city>. I am not coming to USC."

Buyer: "Can u give me a lil discount since I have 2 drive out 2 valley cause your ad says west la"

So, because my San Fernando Valley ad says I will also go to the Westside, but I will not go to USC, I owe him a discount?

More CL fun:

I see a listing for an iPhone 3g for $280.

I send the following e-mail:

That's CL for you.

MotionMan

Actually, the seller is legally obligated to give it to you for $280 now. He made an offer of $280, you accepted, you've got a contract (or so my brief business law contracts course taught me).
