And I'm surprised at the seemingly favorable terms of the deal!

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies have acquired utilityman Ty Wigginton and cash from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.

Wigginton batted .242 with 15 homers and 47 RBIs in 130 games last season. He played third base, first base, left field and right field. The deal was announced Sunday night.

The 34-year-old Wigginton has hit .265 with 158 homers and 548 RBIs in 1,190 games in 10 seasons with the New York Mets, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Houston, Baltimore and Colorado.

Wigginton was an All-Star in 2010 with the Orioles.

Has power? Check.

Plays third? Check.

And first? Check.

And left field? Check.

At 34, fits the Philly team geriatric demographic? Check.

Has a name rife with possibilities for the group of beer swilling young fans who will dress up and constitute his posse in the bleachers?

My favorite Philly move is when they signed Papelbon before the new CBA came into effect, so they still have to give up a draft pick when they wouldn't have had to if they'd waited. :thumbsup:

I was also not a fan of that deal, but for different reasons. Your reason, however, is inaccurate:

For this offseason, the number of Type A free agents, requiring the highest draft-pick compensation from the team signing a player, will be cut from 21 as part of a one-year deal bridging the way to a new system. There will be no change for the most-prized free agents, such as Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder.

The Phillies lineup is lefty heavy, so, yeah, this is for more balance so as to forestall the use of lefty relievers against the Phils late in games.

Yeah, I know. He's not Babe Ruth, but he fills a depth and flexibility need for the Phils at what looks like a negligible cost:

Further details:

Then again, the Rockies are paying half of Wigginton’s $4 million salary. The Phils are only on the hook for $2 million, with the ability to decline Wigginton’s $4 million 2013 option.

On those terms, it's a decent, low-level pick up of a right handed bat with some power who can help fill in at first while Howard is out, can back up the recovering Polanco at third, and can be used as part of a platoon split in left for the team.

Plus, as noted, he has a cool name. 😉

I just watched "Moneyball" and couldn't help thinking about what goes into player acquisition after reading your post. It really is a crazy business.

The 162 game season: it's a death march that will reach down and expose every weakness a team has. Depth. Inventory. They're needed. It's the little moves that can end up making all the difference.

The Phils' starters at both first and third will be coming off major surgery. Their left field postion is unsettled. Wigginton has a chance to fulfill a bench depth need at near negligible cost for the Phils.

You can always tell the posters who really understand the nuances of baseball from the casual fanboys in discussions such as these.

Not every winning move a franchise makes needs to be on the level of a walk off home run. Sometimes, Anderson, you just need to lay down a sacrifice bunt.

And again, Tyrone Thor Wigginton III is a cool name. 😉

I'd demand an apology from that city as well if I lived there, good call. Hopefully there is someone here who speaks on behalf of the city who can provide you that. :whiste:

People from there seem to have some serious anger management issues though. You'd think they would have thicker skin. That being said, I don't mind the Phillies that much.. Good team. It was enjoyable watching the fans suffer though. 😀

you're right. i am a casual fanboi .. i don't understand the nuances of baseball trades... but i do understand one thing. the rockies SUCK! and any player the rockies dont want... CANT be good.

I believe that Papelbon falls into this category:

Under the new CBA, teams that sign the remaining Type A relievers will not be forced to surrender draft picks, a source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The teams that sign those relievers and certain other Type A free agents will not forfeit draft picks but the teams that lose those players will still receive compensatory picks (from Twitter).

This means teams can sign Ryan Madson, Francisco Rodriguez, Heath Bell, and other top relievers this offseason without penalty. The measure is not retroactive, however, meaning that the Phillies will still surrender their first-round pick for signing Jonathan Papelbon. Had they waited, the Phils would not have had to sacrifice a pick as there is no sacrificing picks for Type A relievers.
