I believe that Papelbon falls into this category:

Had they waited, the Phils would not have had to sacrifice a pick as there is no sacrificing picks for Type A relievers.

Hmmm, interesting!

That's a rumor which I suspect, but of course do not know, will turn out to be a misreading of the details of the new agreement. We shall see.

I didn't like the terms of the Phillies signing of Papelbon even without this. If true, it would be true insult to injury. D:

did we sign madson yet?

Not happening now that "we" signed Papelbonehead.

Still confused about paying that much for papelbon

I'm more aghast than confused. It does fit Amaro's MO, though. For reference, see Ryan Howard's contract, or as I like to call it, THE WORST CONTRACT IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. ;)

On a more granular level, I understand all the reasons why Amaro did what he did with both Howard and Papelbon, I just disagree with them.

For 2 mil I can stomach it. But taking Papelbon over Madson will prove to be incredibly dumb in the long run.

Yea, the rockies are stupid. Follows the trend of stupid trades by Denver teams. Its a terrible time to be a sports fan in Colorado these days.

Nuggets, trade Melo for spare parts and include Chauncey too - why not

Rockies, trade your ace pitcher Ubaldo for pitchers that may or may not ever be in the rotation at all much less top 2

Broncos, where to start here, jesus - McDaniels should be shot

Avalanche, Varlamov is terribad, Erik Johnson is terribad

That bridge is less than a half mile from my house, probably one of the more anachronistic neon signs you'll see.

They should replace it with 'Trenton... give us another five years'

You arent a true phillies fan

I don't wanna hear it from u! lol

While Pap was great last year, it just makes you wonder how long he will maintain his elite velocity of 95/96. Especially throwing the splitter which puts additional strain on the arm. Madson usually doesn't get hurt much (unless self inflicted lol) and has more longevity with the changeup. It'd be a lot better if Pap got 2 years but 4 was just wasting money. My prediction is that he will Brad Lidge us.

That's my fear, too. Of course, if he gives us Lidge's first year with the Phils along with the accompanying World Series win, many will say that the contract, in a certain perverse sense, will have been worth it.

My beefs are:

1. Like you, I would have preferred Madson over Papelbon, for more than one reason.

2. Four years for either was both insane, and likely unnecessary.

3. Even the per year money amount ($12.5 million) was overboard.

4. I just don't LIKE Papelbon.

Even less cost in the Wigginton deal. At MOST, if Wigginton performs so well that the Phillies deliriously decide to exercise their 2013 option on him, only then will the Phils owe Colorado anything at all, and even then, peanuts:

Wigginton is due to make $4 million in 2012, with a $4 million option or $500,00 buyout for 2013. According to the Denver Post, the Rockies will cover half of Wigginton's 2012 salary.

According to the Post, if the Phillies exercise Wigginton’s option, the Rockies will receive either $100,000 in cash or a player. If they don’t excercise the option, the Rockies will be have to pay part of Wigginton’s buyout.

Howard has the worst contract in MLB? Hardly.

I can't stand Papelbon either - but closers with a proven record of success are hard to find - Madson could just as easily implode next year and become a career middle-man.

So, KGB, I was wondering . . . Are the rumors I am now starting that your username stands for Ken Gropes Barbie true?

And is it further true that YOU are the inspiration for this wildly successful Mattel product, so popular amongst pre-pubescent girls and gay men of all ages, from your unique and unforgettable fashion sense down to your also lacking key, reproductively important, anatomical details? :p ;) :D

I'll have you know that my "Ken" doll is anatomically correct (to scale, of course). :p

... and VERY butch!!!

My favorite Philly move is when they signed Papelbon before the new CBA came into effect, so they still have to give up a draft pick when they wouldn't have had to if they'd waited.

Had they waited, the Phils would not have had to sacrifice a pick as there is no sacrificing picks for Type A relievers.

Turns out you're both wrong. That's what you get for taking rumor and speculation as fact. ;)

Provided they offer salary arbitration to Madson by Wednesday's midnight deadline, the Phillies will be compensated with a first-round pick and a compensatory pick. The first-round pick would come one spot ahead of the team that signs Madson, who is sure to be offered arbitration by the Phillies. Any team that signs Madson would retain its first-round pick, a change from the previous rules for Type-A free agents.

The Type-A rules remained the same for Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins and pitcher Roy Oswalt as well as six other free agents, including Papelbon. So if the Phillies offer Rollins and Oswalt arbitration, they will be compensated with a first-round pick and a compensatory pick for each player. If another team signs them, however, they lose their first-round pick. The Phillies would have lost their first-round pick even if they had waited until the new CBA was in place before signing Papelbon.
As stated above, they also will get compensatory picks for Madson and Oswalt if they tender them. Not much chance they will tender Oswalt, but every damn chance in the world they will tender Ryan Madson.

Still don't like the terms of the Phillies deal for Papelbon, or signing El Cabeza Carne over Madson, though.
