I've started to buy pc games again because of Steam. It's perfect for guys like me who lose everything.

Haven't we've seen the gamestop threads enough? No disrespect to the OP because I love what he did. There are a bunch of clueless console monkeys running those stores but you can't blame them since that's 95% of what they work with. People are always blindly biased for what they are familiar with.

LETS set it straight once and for all.
Gamestop reduced pc gaming space not because of pc gaming sales down but because they knew they could make more money reselling used console games. SO PC game space became the unfortunate target. Plus think about it. Back in the day when they had walls full of PC games how many of those titles where actually worth buying? A fraction of the titles displayed IMHO. However, like the OP said they screw up by not even promoting exclusive or highly anticipated PC titles. They could make some good coin with those instead of the 2 year old console title taking up space.

I still walk into Gamestops/ebgames but I don't remember the last time I bought a game there. I can usually find the PC or console title I'm looking for cheaper somewhere else. I still buy as many PC games as I always have. More than I have time to play. ;) All of the LAN gamers I game with do also, buy there PC gamers elsewhere.

The fact that millions of copies of games still sell well for the PC without advertising is proof enough that the PC rocks as a gaming platform. Now imagine if it had the promotion backing the PS3, Wii, and 360 had.

I have been using Steam since it first came out and it has been one of my main ways of getting games. Just miss going to a B&M store and seeing ads for future games. And where I live everyone has a PC and I know dozens of people in my building alone who game heavy on the PC.

Sorting through the crappy selections at stores have pushed me to the internet for all my game purchases, I either get it from online store like Amazon or use Steam/Impulse. I don't think I've picked up a pc game in a store in well over a year.

Since CompUSA closed, no one seems to have a decent selection of PC games anymore. I just go to Amazon also, usually pick up used games there for like $10-20 shipped. Only problem is that I don't hear about new releases much anymore and have missed getting some good ones until long after launch (just got The Witcher recently from Amazon, hadn't even heard of it until the noise about the enhanced edition release).

Anyone know where to see news on upcoming releases in PC games?

1up or IGN are where I go for new game info. Plus I usually buy UK mags like PC Format and PC Games

Could you imagine the difference someone would see with Crysis sitting there in a rolling demo waiting to be played compared to Gears of War or Halo 3? Show the Games for Windows rating required to play the game with it sitting near the Kiosk and there you go. Nice and easy for users to figure it out.

the misconception is that computers cost thousands of dollars to build...not the case. even the not hardcore pc builder knows this. they compare crappy hp's and dells at high prices and think, if the crappy dell is 800bux then the awesome gaming pc must be a ton more..
but i digress

He probably looked at his sales figures and determined that PC games don't sell well there. Even if it's due to a lack of marketing, in his case it wouldn't matter to move those PC games for awhile.

My solution to GameStop is to never shop there. You can always get better deals on used games (and even new games) online and GameStop really screws you over on trade-ins. They are making a killing on the used games that they sell. Buying a used game for $20 and then selling it for $44.99 is huge. Way more than they would ever get on a new title. And I dislike them because of the way they present PC games in most stores. The PC games section looks like crap - most of the boxes are ratty and worn looking and all have been opened with the content removed and they are being sold as "new" games. At least that's how it is at the GameStop stores in San Diego.

heh read this, concerning developers incentives to buy new games vs. used http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55084

they do that to all pc games for the most part, if they have more than one on the floor, then there sealed.. typically though they dont,

On the contrary, if he had any management skills, he wouldn't be managing a GameStop. :)

Dang beat me to it. A manager at Game Stop means he's probably a senior in high school and has been there longer than most. Game Stop is slightly above fast food on the retail later.

Being a manager at a fast food place is very difficult, I have a neighbor who runs a McDonalds and makes around $65,000 a year. If it wasn't a hard job they wouldn't make close to that much and anyone could do it. I know $65k is peanuts for the typical millionaire dude on AT. But running a GameStop is nothing close to running a fast food place.

World of Warcraft. You know, the TV commercials with Mr T and Captain Kirk... Even after almost a full year since first aired, I still see them. A lot.

Not a fan of month subscriptions. Just saying.

i don't watch much tv but that is the only PC game ad I have seen on TV. Eveyrthing else is for consoles.

I hate to tell you this buddy but your rant is weak. And its obvious you've never run a business before.

You dont sell what you like. You sell what the customer likes. If you dont you will find yourself on welfare very quickly.

As for you being a customer: Unless you buy 20 copies of every PC game that ever comes out, you arent doing him any favors.

That is correct. Fastfood = 100 times(or more) the customers per day. Boutiqe retail stores are the easiest places to run, and the easiest to go out of buisness.

Congrats on being part of the problem that you just bitched about to the GS manager. Gamestop makes a large chunk of their money on used console games. This affects many of their decisions with how the place is run.

Its because I am put in a position to buy online because local retailers do not stock nor support, for the most part, advertising PC games in store. I would rather buy a PC game in a store instead of waiting for shipping. But they just dont carry new releases on release day if ever. And if by some miracle that they do have a PC game on launch day, it's usually for preordered customers only.

I wasn't talking about buying PC games online, I was talking about buying used console games. You buy used console games, EB/GS love you for that. Practically their entire business is sculpted around selling people games that someone else already played because it's 100% bonus profit for them.

PC games cannot compete with used console games in the eyes of a retailer.
