Pit Bulls are aggressive by nature, but the natural instinct is aggression toward dogs. They were bred for dog fighting in the 1800s, and if they had the slightest bit of aggression toward humans they were shot on sight. Somewhere along the way since then it has become fashionable to use them as guard dogs and the like so the aggression toward humans is not always discouraged any more.
I have a pit/black lab mix. We are fortunate that she has no aggression toward humans whatsoever. However, we had to go through a lot of training to curb her aggression toward other dogs, and even now it's a struggle.

The breed is cute. People own them, since they are cute. Well, go look at them in pictures. They have no place living in most neighborhoods among children who can be attacked by them. WTF are we thinking, allowing such a fscked up, unpredictable animal to live among our kids?
Very soon, you will see a ban on them nationwide, I hope.

I can't believe that the animal control officer is using a leash to handle this dog instead of a control pole.

Awesome job! My neighbors have pitbulls, but keep them inside or fenced the the back. This, although, isn't 100% secure.
Again ... nice work OP. It is good read stories like this ... they don't make the news nearly as much as they should. :beer:

I did not read the entire thread, but the OP did the right thing and has big stones to have done it. That big male is very scary looking. What was his problem? Did animal control put him down? How are the girls?

It's a long story, but suffice it to say I made it a point to introduce myself along with another neighbor yesterday and we made it clear we were concerned about the dogs (4 of them there now) wandering loose since there are so many small children in our neighborhood. Next time the Pit Bull is seen loose I am calling Animal Control.

Good thing the second dog was just a spectator or that could have gotten extremely ugly for everyone there. Knowing there were 2 dogs on the scene, I don't think I could have charged in like that without some kind of weapon at least. That's a heroic thing you did, you deserve to at least get a mention on the local news.

Wow...I just read your third update and I am sort of speechless with a bit of a tear welling up in my eyes. That gift they brought you was OUTSTANDING I think
Gift for them? Some sort of keepsake item that will make them both smile when they see it and remember the nice man who saved the day. Something that will effectively block out the bad of that day and in its place produce a happy calm feeling for them.

It's not an unpredictable breed. Agressive breed? Yes. But not unpredictable. Plenty of breeds are aggressive.

Whoa! What a cool gift and how fitting. I say you don't get anything in return. For the most part I am all for etiquette but you don't need to return the favor when it's a thank you gift. I think that's sort of cheesy. Then after you give them a gift, do they give you one to thank you for your thank you for their thank you?
