Good job. Like you, I'd hope someone would do the same thing for me if my little girl was being attacked.

I hope the girls recover ok. I really feel bad for the younger child. I hope she's not permanately traumatized by dogs now. My wife was attacked by a dog while out walking around our neighborhood and still gets very nervous around dogs (except our own.)

Too bad they don't know who the owner is. With a halfway decent lawyer, their parents would never have to worry about paying for college for the girls (or the resulting medical bills.) If the medical bills are too high though, their insurance company might do a little looking into it anyway.

Good for you. I hate pitbulls.
I was almost killed by one when I was 8 years old. :(

Nothing anyone says will ever make me like pitbills ever again.

I think this is an urban myth. I've 'heard' of people who claim to have done this as well when i was growing up.

Good job!

Damn, you must be a big guy to be able to grab and hold onto that dog. It's friggin huge for a pitbull.

My cousin told me about a call he had a couple weeks ago. Sheriff's dept got a call about a viscious dog at the local McD's. He pulled up and found a dog going crazy attacking another dog. He pulled out his ar-15... cap. Lady comes out screaming "OMG I can't believe you did that, my kids had to watch that. Don't you have animal control"

He says, "Lady, I am animal control"

JAS wont say it but I will. We work in the same office, if anyone can lift a 60+ lb attacking pit bull by the throat JAS can. JAS is a big mofo and evidently he is someone you want on your side in a dog fight! :)

Kudos to you for your quick thinking, bravery in acting.

Shame about the dog, it is a gorgeous animal. and after working in the vets office, i am one of those that believe that pitt bulls are not born agressive, they are bred and raised agressive.

but still... choice between a dog and a kid... not question, the kid.

you are a hero to the family of those kids.

Great job OP. I hope they put the older dog down and charge the owner (if they find him) with a crime. They should just outlaw all of these breeds. They have no right to exist, man made them and man should unmake them.

The OP did the right thing by running to the victim first. It only takes seconds for a pitbull to sever a major artery (especially on a child), and grabbing protection/weapon first could have cost the girl her life.

Also, I would think twice about firing a gun at a dog locked onto a child's body. Too close for comfort for me (although I can imagine some situations that would require it).

Instead of getting a pit bull people should just get a American Staffordshire Terrier. A while back the Staffordshire Terrier was brought over from England, and the americans breed it to be bigger and stronger for fighting and called it the American Staffordshire Terrier. When dog fight was banned in america they breed the American Staffordshire Terrier to be tammed, but some idiots kept the original breed alive and called it the Pit Bull.

Laguna Blvd. near Hwy. 5

Update:
I stopped by the hospital on my way to pickup my daughter from daycare. Both the girls were doing fine, their mother, grandmother and other sister were there as well. They were both being discharged when I arrived. No stitches for either of them, although the Dr.'s told the older girl that she should have had stitches.

I only hope that I would have been brave enough to do what you did in that case, excellent work and you are definitely an asset to your communtiy.

On a side note, and some random trivia, part of what makes specifically pitbulls and bull terriors so dangerous if they do attack is that they are prone to have nervous system problems. Specifically, the epidermal layer can be quite numb to the touch, meaning you could walk up to one of these beasts and beat the hell out of it and it only feels the pressure, not the pain from it. Thats one of the reasons that you hear of so many fatality cases with these dogs, not nessisarily because they are more likely to attack but because if they DO attack they are more likely to fight with all of their life because they don't know any better.

I've never understood the pitbull love either. For a quote "similar" position, a doberman or rottie seems much more logical. Both are quite vicious, but are very loyal and caring breeds that tend to look after their loved ones. I've never had better dogs then the rotties we have had :)

I'm ridiculously glad that pit bulls are banned in my hometown. I hope they ban them in Toronto as well.

Kudos to the OP for his courage and quick thinking! You're definitely a hero.
