Used to play, stuff costs more than twice as much what it cost when I was a teenager so i can't bring myself to build another army. I prefer Warmachine or Malifaux, not only are they cheaper to play but I prefer having fewer models with more complex rules rather than having hordes of models that are practically cannon fodder. Nothing like having your $50 dreadnaught destroyed before it even gets to move or having half of a marine squad blown away in one shot from a battle cannon. I still have a big space marine army and a smaller eldar force, the models just feel too overpriced for me to build up any more.

I played Warmachine a lot in the past 2 years and here it's more expensive than any other miniatures game. A 10-man unit in Warmachine cost between 60CAD-110CAD while a 10-man Space Marine or other faction unit cost 45-50CAD.

A Warjack box will be cheaper by 15-20CAD but that's the only thing that is cheaper, the rest is a no brainer and when you check colossals/gargans, you start to understand how expensive WMH as become.

Plus, in Warmachine/Hordes, you don't have the quality nor the customization and options 40k offers.

Yeah Warmachine is pretty pricey as well, but 40K armies have always been much larger for me. I got into Warmachine because it was more of a smaller "skirmish" type game but it's definitely going the way of 40K with massive battles and armies. I may try getting back into 40K sometime, I haven't played since 5th edition was out so I'd like to at least see how it's changed.

used to play 40k, and every once in a while i'll look at the minis and be like "damn, it'd be fun to get back into it"

and then i realize how much it would hit my wallet, as it's only gotten more expensive.

are there some kind of rules to these game things that require miniature doodads to play? Or is it just wealthier player = larger army = wins?

You just buy whatever pieces you want and can afford, field your army, then request someone to fight your army?

I don't get it.

^^

Each piece is assigned a relative point value based on ability, and you set your battles at a certain point level i.e. 1500 pts - 5k points.

As you can imagine, a 1500 pt battle might be a few squads and a 5k battle might be giant armies.

Warhammer 40k has some cool lore and sounds potentially fun, but Games Workshop is basically the devil so I will never buy anything they are associated with.

What'd they do?

I was really into Wahammer (40k most of all) back in the 90s. I still have most of it, but when I moved I lost contact with most of the people i knew that played it. I've thought about getting back in here and there, but just don't really have the time. I still read the lore when I come across them. It's a pity some of the splinter versions aren't worth anything, I have all of the "Space Marine" Epic scale stuff that I wouldn't mind unloading. Not to mention some of the OG Blood Bowl stuff that I rarely played but felt compelled to collect (running a comic shop was both awesome and horrible for a collecting hoarder.)

I love the books and PC games but I also love my money too much to play the tabletop.

The Horus Heresy books are great, if a bit sidetracked here and there.

HAhaha would be nice. I also started Mordheim since some friends still play that a lot and they're starting a new campaign soon. I bought 20 or so dwarves from a friend for dirt cheap and painted some. Can't wait to try this one too!

Still have 12 or so dwarves to finish and the bases to wash/paint on these but it's gonna rock!

I like Minis but I HATE painting.
Would rather get right to the game. In some cases I prefer to do printouts on card stock and fold them over like little tents so they stand up.
