3 week update:

I'm down to being only marginally slower with the straight razor than with my fusion. I can also now get a closer shave with the straight razor with the grain than I can with the fusion. I haven't done much against the grain stuff yet as I'm still getting used to it some.

One thing I found that works well is to use this pre-shave oil on my face as it helps to lubricate my skin. I'm just using a free sample pack I got at a shaving/cigar shop but will look for more later.

Mine said the same thing, his reason being thats its easier to shave someone elses face with a straight razor, than your own.

I have my barber use a straight razor on the majority of my head... High and Tight. It isn't as close as I ilke it, but she uses the disposable type of blades. I have had a "real" straigh razor used once... stayed clean and was baby smooth.

I don't know how you can be only marginally slower with a straight razor than something like a fusion....

You must just shave slow. My boss has been using a straight razor for a couple decades and will switch to a Mach III when he is in a hurry so it must be a significant difference.

He has fucked himself up a couple times rushing a shave.

Paying that much for a damn blade??? I know your lady got it for you but shit, the initial cost is too much.

Maybe my estimation is a bit off and yeah, maybe I shave a bit slow with the fusion normally. I find I can get everything but the goatee quicker with the straight razor just because I don't have to clean the blade after every swipe or two, and because the blade is bigger. I slow down a lot on my chin and moustache though and that's where I lose the time.

I also don't shave before work just so I'm not forced to rush. I'll shave in the evening when I have the time to do it right.

Well, a good blade like that apparently is called a "2 generation blade" meaning that I could use it for my entire life, then pass it to my son (or skip him and go to my grandson) and he could use it for the rest of his life. So add up the cost of all of the blades and shavers you would use over your life, multiply by 2, and see if it's worth it. Even only being 27 now I'm pretty sure I've spent over $200 on disposable blades in my life.

Unless you shave with double edged blades, you can easily make up the money in a year or two. If I used fusion blades, I'd spend around $75-$100 a year on replacement blades.
