No I didn't.
The movie is about the Pussification of Males and regaining "Manhood". It's about destroying the Society that has become a factory of PC Manhood Pussification. The movie Assumes that "Manhood" is about Toughness and that lost "Manhood" needs to be regained through unorthodox means, pummelling each other and enjoying the pain therein.
It's an appeal to a Baser emotions in Males, especially hormonally unbalanced young Males. It's an appeal to the same sets of Male emotions as that which the Suicide Bombers and 9/11 Hijackers drew on to commit themselves to unnatural acts of aggression.
By no means do I suggest that FC inspires acts of Violence, to do so would be to give the movie more credit than it deserves. The movie is on par with a Bruce Lee movie or Red Dawn.
What's good about FC is the acting. It is very well done. The story sucks though.
You must have turned off the movie before the last act. The last 30 minutes of the movie are there for the sole purpose of proving you wrong, that must be at least slightly discouraging for you.
Lucky for you I'll explain it. Immediately following the commissioner castration scene, Jack's jealousy of Angel Boy takes over. This combines with his growing sense of loss from "losing" fight club to Tyler, and he lashes out. He destroys Angel Boy's beauty, and he has his falling out with Tyler in the fantastic rainy car scene. The rest of the movie is characterized by Jack's statement at the end "I don't want this".
The beginning of the movie Jack runs from his overindulgence in consumerism. He creates Tyler to get away from it all, and he runs to the exact opposite. His problem, however, is that he overindulges once again, this time with nihilism and violence. Fight Club was a healthy release, Project Mayhem was things getting out of control. It is a mirror image of the beginning of the movie, with his out of control consumerism. This is best shown with the scene where Bob gets killed. When the guys start chanting "His name was Robert Paulson" they show themselves to be nothing but stupid followers. They moved, as he did, from mindless consumers to mindless nihilists. Its sad to me that so many people completely miss that point, I'm not sure how it could have been made more obvious to the audience.
As Jack works during the ENTIRE last act of the movie to fix his mistakes, it should be clear that he made a mistake. "I am responsible for all this and I accept that". The damage that he has wrought to a former friend in the death of Bob, and in the soon-to-be death of Marla. If you recall, he left his consumerism and began his manhood all because he wanted Marla. While the movie is absolutely loaded with great social commentary, it boils down to its core as a love story. Everything is done for Marla. "The guns, the bombs, the revolution...it all has something to do with a girl called Marla".
To tie it all together, the last act of the movie exists to show that the violence was out of hand and WRONG. Strength of individual character is what people need, not following the pack, be it consumerism or nihilism. The movie centered around the nihilism section of his life because it is far more interesting watching him fight guys than to spend an hour watching him order furniture from a catalog. While the movie does have a good point, it does need to entertain while it makes that point.
