I just remembered how much I hate SP2

My mom just got an IBM X32 laptop (yay for her) which is surprisingly small and happens to come with firewire! While the laptop is fine, what isn't fine is the fact that the laptop came with XP SP2. I'm suppose to install some programs before she begins using the laptop and I swear to god I want to pull my hair out, working on XP is extremely painful ATM.
From that stupid security center, to the annoying change of icons and this 'limited connectivity ******', to the constant popups every time I install a new ****** program, this is driving me nuts! I only have XP on my desktop systems because of program compatibility, on my older laptops I run windows 2000 and it's a seemingly peaceful experience.

If there was one program I can think of that 2000 could use is the image 'slideshow/preview' equivalent that XP has, or something even better.

How can you guys stand the pain of using this OS? XP SP1 is so much less of an annoyance than SP2 it's incredible. Also, you guys wouldn't happen to know of ways I can reduce this insane memory usage would you? I'm using 256MB of ram just staring at a ****** desktop right now, this is compared to the 64MB my 2000 laptop uses which BTW I would like to know how I think durocshark reduced to 32MB. (PM ME PLZ)

ARRRRGGGHHHHHH I ****** HATE SP2!

preach on, I disable stupid sh!t SP2 does like warn me of no firewall "oh noes!" and my adaware wants to re-able it because obviously my b0x has been hax0r3d!! The security updates are obviously a good thing. But I am with you about not liking some of the things SP2 pulls. Although, I don't think I'm quite as poassionate about it as you are ;)

How to improve the Windows XP SP2 experience in three easy steps:

Step 1: Cry a river
Step 2: Build a bridge
Step 3: Get over it

;)

I for one have no problem with the extra hoops you go through with SP2. If you hate SP2, steer clear of Vista as it's another beast altogether.

I have no problems with SP2. I just disable the security center service right after I do a clean install and no annoyances after that.

Also if you are looking for a good slide show program check out ACDSee. I use version 4 since it is much less bloated than the newer versions.

Control Panel - Security Center - Change the way SC annoys...er alerts me - uncheck the three boxes. Done.

I also turn autoupdate off (is it really so hard to visit WindowsUpdate every now and then?) and turn off autoplay. God I can't stand autoplay! The only thing autoplay is good for is for noobs to run games off the optical drive. Me, I keep a folder on the desktop and have all my game executable shortcuts there (sooo much quicker than waiting for the splash screen on some games).

Finally, I just disable pop up alerts, almost all audible alerts (like I need a clicky noise to know I've double clicked something), hide inactive icons, highlight new programs, kill the stupid dog animation for searching folders, revert to classic style folders and apply it globally, and group similar programs (hint to MS, that's what tabs are for...aka Firefox style). On a new install this takes me all of 5mins to avoid a lifetime of BS.

I'll go one better. Once you set everything up on a new install the way you like it without the annoyances, just run the files and settings transfer wizard to make a backup of all the aformentioned changes to shave that 5min down to 30sec.

Most of that stuff is on the list I have that grows longer with each new MS OS and not unique to SP2. The only thing in the OP that I see that came with SP2 is the Security Center and it takes about 15 seconds to disable the annoying nag screens. The new things I added to the stuff you mentioned that came in with XP was to re-enable my desktop icons, disable the desktop cleanup, enable the quicklaunch toolbar, and do away with those annoying New Program install popups.

That's a bunch of long strings you gotta type in isn't it? There are some apps that will do all that for you aren't there?

I have had no issues with SP2. Recently I disabled the Security Center service which is nice, but it didn't bother me THAT much before.

I have no problems with SP2. If MS hadn't released SP2, you'd all be bitching that MS needs to do something to fix the security holes in XP. No matter what MS does, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
