Jesus I cannot comprehend why Americans don't like stone, it is the measurement above pounds, it's like saying oh I'm x Inches tall rather than using feet.

Stop derailing another thread asshole. No one fucking cares about you or the UK. Knock it off...

It's great that you're taking some initiative, but I think your first step should be to educate yourself on dieting techniques. Simply cutting half your food is a very bad strategy and will (100% certainty) lead to failure. Do some Googling and find some good reliable information, or ask in the H&F subforum for help. You're going to want a real weight loss strategy with proven results.

However, cutting out the sugary drinks is an excellent first step which should be undertaken without further thought.

No big rush. It took 21 years to put it on, and you have plenty of time to take it off. If you try to cut everything at once, you might be more likely to go nuts at the convenience store. I say just start with the sugary drinks, and analyze what you eat. Cutting your diet in half is pretty aggressive, and you may wind up miserable. No point in that. Slow and steady wins the race ;^)

before cutting your food intake drastically, have you thought about making a list of what you eat and seeing where you can make healthy changes?

if you cut your food too much too fast, you'll just be starving and miserable. imo, you're better off replacing shit for healthier alternatives and scaling back your daily calorie intake gradually.

I can't emphasize enough how important it is to keep track of what you eat, even when you go off the reservation and have junk food. it's a lot easier to snack and graze when there's no accountability for it.

The best stuff to cut out is stuff that's high in calories but isn't filling. These things make you gain weight but don't make you feel full for long so you'll eat more and again sooner. Candy and most snack food are examples of this. If you want a snack a piece of fruit or a few veggie sticks are MUCH better.

False

Cutting your food intake in half (or even more) is a great way to lose weight IF you have the willpower to make it stick.

Good luck brianmanahan

No. that is a terrible idea. Weight loss has to be sustainable. Halving your food intake will absolutely wreck havoc on your body. You will be miserable all the time, your body is start going crazy in order to compensate for the massive amount of decrease in food intake and it is the worst way ever to lose weight. The best thing to do is to count calories and keep a sustainable amount of calorie loss per week. At that weight, you could probably lose 3-5 pounds a week pretty easily by doing some minimal cutting of food.

Also exercise is crucial.

that's a giant "if."

it's kinda hard to explain how hungry you can get when you're already used to consuming that many calories every day.

at least in my own experience, making a drastic cut like that would lead to a few days of feeling great about myself, followed by a few days of miserable hunger, ending in a binge after which any hope of dieting would be completely sabotaged mentally.

HAL, FFS its not that we dumb Americans don't like stone as you say, it is that we just don't use that term. Why is that hard to comprehend? Is it because to you the stone unit is so obviously superior that anyone not using it is obviously retarded or something?

And it sure didn't take you long to go completely off topic again, and turn a serious thread into an anti American troll. Way to go!

If your trolling then I recommend doing some speed. Start with lines and when your nose stops working get a nice glass bowl. The added benefit is after a while of smoking glass you will lose all your teeth so it will be harder for you eat that much!

If your being serious start walking everyday. Make small lifestyle changes. It starts with the little things. If you make drastic changes quickly its easier to fall back.

Go see a doctor right away. they will have some input as well.

That's probably going to be harder than you will really want. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to substitute some of those sodas with other flavored drinks. Kool-aid for example, no calories in that until you add sugar and I use significantly less, or you could use an artificial sweetener. Sure, it won't give you the caffeine kick, but if you work your way down off that you'll find you can do pretty well without it.

Some of you guys are just being plain dicks to the OP.

OP, as others have said, ditch the soda, it is the worst thing. If you drink it for the caffeine to give you a boost try black coffee. Second, as others have mentioned, walk, do just do the I'm just chilling walk, walk like you about to be late to something. Walk twice a day, 30 mins each time, to start off if you can't do the whole walk at the brisk pace, try walking half of the 30 mins hard and then the other half calmly till you can and work your way up adding a min or two each day or two till you can walk briskly the entire time.

Cut back how much you eat but don't do it drastically quickly cause otherwise you will be miserable and will probably cheat. For example just take a little bit less then you normally would, like if you eat chicken nuggets and you normally 10 for a serving plus sides, try taking just 8. Do it in baby steps once you get use to the smaller portion do it again. It will take sometime but you need to not feel like you are super hungry while doing it, a bit of hunger will be expected but as long as it is tolerable you'll eventually get use to the new amount of food and you can repeat the process.

One more thing, drink lots of water, it is your friend. Try to kick all the other stuff, if you drink milk go to skim or work your way down to it. Water is also a decent appetite suppressant that can help you as you are lowering the amount you eat to offset some of the hunger you would feel.

Those are all easy things that can be done in steps, think of it is like that patch system for smokers. You are easing down from what you are use to till you can quit all together (quit in this case is a reasonable calorie intake each day)

at 375 lb. its kinda sobering. i gotta lose some weight somehow but hopefully dont have to give up eating the foods i love.

There's no way that can't happen.

You need to seriously examine what and how much you eat and you need to start setting aside an hour a day to excercise. Losing 10lbs a month (120 lbs/yr) is a fairly easy thing to do if you can control your intake.

You would probably do yourself a huge favor to start seeing a dietician or weightloss professional to start off. They can help you work out a plan. After that it's up to you to stick to it.

OP, you might want to find a good forum with others who are in the same situation as you and are trying to lose weight. I assume they would be able to offer better moral and practical support and understanding, and can relate easier. Unfortunately, I don't know of such a site but I have no doubt that one can be found.

In addition to cutting down on the soda, I've found that just getting some physical activity like walking in each day helps me lose weight. On a 3 week trip in Europe in which I was eating decidedly unhealthy local foods and practically sticking an IV of regular soda into myself, I managed to lose 7 pounds (not due to illness either). The only difference was that I was doing a crapton more walking there than is normal for me.

Start your weight loss plan with realistic goals that you can maintain. Good luck with it.

honestly, every attempt I made at weight loss failed until I reconciled with the fact that it's OK to eat whatever I want to -- as long as I do so in moderation.

if I'm craving a bowl of ice cream, I'll have it... but I'll have a serving, not an entire carton.

For me, getting more activity each day has other benefits. Getting some exercise each day is infinitely better than any amount of caffeine during the day. I sleep better each night and stay awake better during the day. It will really help as you cut out the caffeinated drinks.
