I belong to the AdoptAPlatoon organization.
It was started by a group of mothers, who had children serving overseas.
I don't have a child in the military but wanted to do something to help out. I was sending letters and packages to a pretty nice guy for over a year, and he got to come home.

I requested another soldier and I just got the info a few minutes ago! Basically, I send socks, toothpaste and other toiletries, Gatorade, magazines... well, whatever the soldier asks for.

They also have other schemes... like candy for kids, or the crayons for children (where you send stuff to the poor kids in Iraq or Afghanastan) thru the military and they disperse them.

Probably seems silly, but it is important to me, and I am really happy...

Hahaha!! That was the first thing I thought of... sending Playboy mags and stuff... but we are strictly forbidden from sending stuff that is offense to the native people.

Damn, that is pretty cool. I guess I can finally get rid of the 300 issues of Maxim/Stuff/FHM I have stacked up.

:p

When I first joined, I did not realize how..well, i wont say expensive really, but like shopping for another kid. When it came to be X-Mas.. I got my family to.. well, I said that instead of buying each other gifts, we should just drop all the money in a pot and shop for the soldiers and their families. A kind of THANK YOU from people here that are safe and have plenty already!

But you are correct, guys.. they like 4 wheeler, Motor Trend, and etc. And lip balm.. Good Lord, by the case load!! And The washing machine in Iraq and Afghanastan must eat one of each pair of socks, too... cause they ask for them like I have never seen.

I am a female!

It was a joke, I think... although it is not very flattering for either of us!

Interesting books, DVDs, magazines, CDs...They must freakin' die of boredom over there.

I bet Q-tips are in hot demand(Get grit 'n sand out of the weapon and ears and nose...) Lots of socks, underwear, warm clothing (deserts get cold at night.) I can tell you, fleece clothing is a soldier's best friend.

I didn't either, until a little over a year ago.
I wanted to do *something* to serve my country, but I am too old, too fat, and too lazy, so I did the next best thing, and decided to support our troops.

The credit goes to the Moms of the soldiers. they thought up the idea and it is amazing what they have accomplished.. placing thousands of soldiers and all the other outreach programs and donations stuff. They are truly amazing!

That's very nice of you, KarenMarie. You'll never know just how much that soldier appreciates that package. When you're in the middle of nowhere, even though you're surrounded by your troop-mates, you still feel so alone and home seems so far away...mostly b/c it is far away. :(

By picking up their spirits, you too serve your country. Thank you. :)

When I was in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm I was getting care packages from different people/groups. I remember reading letters from kids in classrooms, that was really touching to me at the time.

Things like this DOES mean a lot to servicemen and women in action, KarenMarie is someone's hero.

It was a joke, and it rhymed too.

However, what isn't a joke is the fact that I am humbled by your charity.

I appreciate all the good words, but I can promise everyone that i am not deserving of any of them.

I am a spoiled, lazy, overweight, middle aged woman, and I feel that I have not done nearly enough to support my country. I have always taken everything for granted, never appreciated my freedoms enough and did not realize until now I am older. I am also a huge hypocrit... as I am all for standing behind my President (like him or not) but wouldn't want VeggieFrog to be in the war. It is easy to sit in my comfy couch with my disgustingly exprensive electronics set up and let the others do the fighting.

I appreciate everyone being so nice about it, but believe me... i am not deserving. I just got excited by getting the new soldier and wanted to share my good feeling.

But thank, everyone.

I'm happy for you doing this kind deed for our soldiers but as for the above statement I'd rather give Crayons, Candy, and other stuff for the AMERICAN poor/homeless kids out there. I mean lets take care of our own FIRST.

But :wine::D to you for the soldiers.
