You're thinking of canker sores, and they are not related to the herpes simplex virus. You're right that cold sores ARE herpes, but they occur on the outside of the lip. Not everyone has them. I unfortunately was gifted with them by my ex-wife when were first dating - her whole family has them. I'm going to be as careful as possible to not spread them to anyone else.
