Were you fired or laid off?

(Edit - BTW, they can do whatever they want. :))

Reason I ask, is you can collect unemployment while you look for a new job

You're screwed. It's called At Will Employment. You can leave or be asked to leave at anytime. A company is not required to keep on employees if it might lose money. It's a sad fact that people lose jobs in a slowdown.

Sorry to hear it dude.

Why can't you collect unemployment?

My dad's been stood down temporarily due to lack of work (for a few weeks tops) during the 15+ years he's been at his current job, & during the downtime he was able to collect unemployment.

I'm 17 and this was a p/t job... although I did work for them full time last summer.. so I was working there for more than a year...

Can I collect unemployment?? (I'm guessing no)

if you want job security, join a union. you'll never be fired. but then if you join a union you'll have to give up your self-dignity and your pride in your work.

You can certainly be laid off even if you're in a union. Just ask the 30,000 Boeing employees who are being laid off. You lose a bit more than your dignity too, as you have to pay union dues (although that *might* be offset by anything extra that you might get paid as a result of union negotiations).

You can file for un-employment. If you are able to work full-time if a job is offered, then you can collect.
If you are not able to (because of school schedule), then you will probably be disqualified. Age is not an requirement or disqualifier.

God this really sucks. Money from this job was what I was going to use to pay for part of college......ARGH....

Where can I read up about the requirements for collecting unemployment?

Not directly a disqualifier, but it can be depending on the labor laws in your state. Many states won't allow 17 year olds to work full-time during the school year, even if they think they have the time.

Welcome to the world. Cry me a river blah, blah blah. Start a business, or go find a new job. Find stuff you can sell higher than you buy. Rent a Guard companies must be hiring like crazy. Better than nothing. Oops you may be still too young. Chances are you are going survive unless the terrorists unleash a bioligical attack on you. Join the Marine Corps. That will make getting canned seem like a paid vacation. Your plans got changed without notice, make new plans. :D

I mean yea, things are always going to change. But this was my only source of college money. I'm still in shock that I got fired.... since none of those damn salesmen at the dealership do jack anywayz.... I'm always the one running around fixing their computers...

One - Stay in contact with the dealership. They may need you back soon.

Two - Contact your division of employment security before the end of the week.
The amount of work credits that you build up (hours per every 3 months) is what will determine your benifits. The last quarter will not be entered into the system.

Three - If the dealership is a chain, contact other shops, they may be able to take you.

That would depend entirely upon your state laws.

Oh, and sorry about your situation. It ain't nothing to get all worked-up about.

cchen,

Life's a bitch, bunky. You're young, suck up and adjust; it won't be the last time you get fired during your career. Even in a down economy, there are opportunities out there. Go, and pursue them with the same zeal you would chase the cute blonde down the street, and soon you will be fine.

Hell, I've been fired so many times in my career, I finally said screw it and went in to business for myself 12 years ago.

For every door that closes, dozens open.

Actually i am hoping that these airline related layoffs dont actually occur. The unions in this industry require that they get 60 days noticed before the layoffs actually happen. Hopefully people will get back onto airplanes in the next couple of weeks...

Don't lose sleep over it. It's only a part time job. Since you're a student I doubt that you'll be able to collect. Look for a part job of the field that you're in.
Sorry to hear that though.
wish you the best of luck

sorry cchen
I was also laid off from my company last Thursday after working my ass of for a year with them. The worst part was that I stockpiled my personal and sick days but they told me that I can't collect from them since they come out of the insurance or some other BS. That's like 50 hours of work that I could have gotten paid for had I not been such a packrat.

See my thread here

BTW, I thought about it all weekend and I realized what Russ said: For every door that closes, a dozen new ones open. I have 2 doors open so far ;)
