Sorry to be a conspiracist, but have you been involved any pro-union protests for your whole foods?

At the WF here, they fired someone because they made the wrong drink and then rather than throw it out, drank it. There is a lot of mumbling that she was really fired because she had been vocal about unionizing WF workers.

lol, No union stuff. WFM is REALLY anti-union. I'm just a college student working to get my tuition money. I don't even agree with most of the stuff WFM believes in, but it was a decent place to work until recently.

They weren't looking for a reason to fire me, I don't believe. Everybody loves me over there. Everybody except this new HR guy who everybody hates. You can't fight the HR person when he gets regional involved and goes over everybody's heads.

Sounds to me like they were looking for a reason. You don't fire a good employee for breaking a rule once. Either they had been looking for a reason or you're not telling us the whole story.

Exactly how does the HR guy further his career by getting you fired? You need to rethink things.

He wants to be a Store Team Leader and has to prove himself by taking his job to a new level. i.e. scoping out anybody doing anything wrong and putting their balls on the block. He's not exactly furthering his career directly, but he's trying to seem like he doesn't care who you are; if you make a mistake, you're gone.

I don't really get why the even bothered to fire me since they're short on help as it is and people will NOT like to hear the reason that I was fired. We really need an e/n thread image....

Chances are people will find out the story of why you were fired and everyone will just get pissed at the mangers and the b!tch wife who canned you (esp true if you have a good rep.) They're F'ing themselves, so I wouldn't worry anymore about it. You'll be pissed for a while, but you'll get another job and soon get over it. Get a degree, get a good job and you'll own them all. 😀

Maybe the new HR guy wants to show everyone that he will fire anyone for the smallest thing.

That sucks bro 🙁 Seriously though - were you interested in a career at that place? A grocery store isn't the best place to be working during college. I made the mistake of just doing retail in college when I could have furthered myself in an internship or a "real job".

Sorry about your job, that sucks.

At my one and only retail style job I outlasted four sets of managers.

Good workers and managers are few and far between. (Good as in decent human beings that are not complete @ssholes or out to rob the company blind while actually doing their job).

No kidding, internships are the bomb. Mine pays somewhere around $14/hr. What's your major? More than likely there's at least one internship offered through your school that's related to it.

i hope things work out for you in the end. you can try to fight to get your job back, but with ppl like this working in HR, do you really want to go back? maybe you can do better working elsewhere (how about work study at college, if you qualify)......

Ouch, sorry to hear that...however, I'm not surprised that you have a bunch of snotty do-gooders at a Whole Foods store 😉

I'm sure you'll find something else, having 4 years of retail and managerial experience under your belt.

My first inclination was to advise to write a letter or sue, but maybe it's better just to move on.

Next time when you're hauled into one of these meetings make the person doing the firing write down the exact reason for termination. They'll probably refuse, but you'll make them sweat a little.

You could ask for a meeting with the HR guy's boss, maybe.

Exactly, depending on you major, this experience at the supermarket will mean jack. It will not get you a job. More of a "oh, that's nice..." sort of thing on a resume.
Get a job that will give you some relevent experience and it will be 100x more useful when you go looking for a "real" job out of college. Do not underestimate this.

Mini-update:

My boss is the one they had to call in to work tonight ( I felt bad since she has 5 kids and had to drop them off at a sitter ) and she says she's going to talk to the manager. The girl who ratted me out might be liable since she rang the alcohol for the incident. That'd be some sweet justice. I spoke to my boss and I have confirmed that although I was terminated, I would be receiving all 146 benefit hours that I have accrued over my 4 years there (not a single vacation day used). That gives me about $1300 for the last month here. That will surely help at least.

I'm not even upset I'm gone now. I was more upset I won't get to see my friends nearly as much. I need to get an internship next summer anyways so in no way will I have any strings attached to me now. My degrees will be in Mathematics and Computer Science as well so surely the retail isn't helping my job experience. It's time I get something related to that anyways. Now to find somewhere to get wasted tonight.

CS major? Yeah, you should find a place pretty easy. Talk to the department head as soon as you can about what internships are offered over the summer.

That's crap. Fvck it, you don't need to work there. I hate gestapo corporations like that. There's something called being human and humans make mistakes. Additionally decent humans would take that incident with a grain of salt and chalk it up to a mistake....not fire you.

I can't believe they'd fire you over something so minor. Have you ever been written up before? Did they write you up for this? I'd say you have a case to make a complaint to someone (dunno who) if they haven't. Disney is the same way. When I worked for them they'd fire you over absolutely nothing. I was never fired, but knew several people who were over incredibly minor things like wearing earrings (and basically having the wrong manager in a bad mood watching over you that day). The fact that they'd fire you over something so little, especially since you're a manager tells me that they were probably just looking for excuses to get rid of staff anyway.

Like others said, don't sweat it and try to get a 'real' job anyhow. I worked in a grocery store for nearly five years from when I was 16 until 21. Five years, and I did a lot of crap at that store and really did learn a lot of things about people. Now, I do not even list those five years on my resume.
Basically jobs like that are useless in all asepcts, except for the money thing obviously.

In a weird and twisted way you getting let go may have been a good thing because it may 'force' you to get a job pertinent to your field of study.

Just key the HR guys car up real good, get drunk and find another job next year. I used to work at a grocery store or two back in high school and early college, the jobs are a dime a dozen when they start hiring before summer roles around. Even if you work your way to the top of the management staff, you're still just king sh|t of turd mountain.
