pics are good. video camera (have todays paper with you) is even better (or both).

Kegger!!!

Make sure high speed internet is available. :) (Note: is wasn't in my apartment... but that was several years ago)

Plan on spending alot of money the first time you go shopping.... Broom, vaccum, initial condiment stock, cleaning products, medicines ... all add up, but fortunately aren't needed every shopping trip.

Make sure you can use the oven/stove without setting off the smoke detector. (I could use the stovetop, but the oven always set it off... no matter how many times I cleaned it)

Like was said before... get to know your neighbors... and remember that you're not the only one living in the building... "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you" (I know sounds corny... it's the parent in me... :p)

Be extremely courteous to your neighbors and get to know them. This will make it easier to have a party every now and then, because they'll know you and be willing to let a few things slide.

When you move out, your documentation may help you keep some of your security deposit.

Do this and look up what is available in terms of internet and cable providers for that apartment. You should have looked it up before signing the lease, but it's your first one and that price/location is so awesome that it doesn't matter much. :)

$310/month?

I'd buy as much bug spray / mouse traps as you can carry and a heavy duty lock.

also, renter's insurance is pretty cheap and is usually a good idea.

make sure you have smoke/CO detectors and they are in working order. Make sure the seal around the refrigerator/freezer door is good so that your electric bill doesn't suck. Clean up messes and hope you live next to and around neighbors who are also clean to prevent bugs/rodent problems.

It's in TN man. I can buy a 5 bed room house here with a four car garage on 10 acres for what you would pay for a little shitter 1/1 house in a crummy area of Jersey.

There are such places that are actually cheap to live in! I pay 400 a month for a single bedroom apartment that is safe to say, big! and I am nowhere near a ghetto.

I live in Tupelo, MS just south of TN. I own rental property and you can't rent a one bedroom apt in the worst part of town for $310 a month.

Gawd! I was paying more than $310 / month for my first apartment in 1981!!! That same apartment is now going for $1,000 / month.

Enjoy your first apartment, but make sure you stay on good terms with your landlord if you want your damage deposit back. I also agree with the other poster, make sure you buy some tenant insurance if you have any valuables such as PC's, TV's, stereo, etc.

There are many places where $300/m will get you a decent place. Even in places where everything else is much higher. My last apartment was $525 for a 2/2 about 10 mins from the ocean walking. Other places were going for $1000-1200 in the area. The guy owned the place free and clear and was really picky about who he rented too. I stayed there 4 years and at the end my rent was only $625.
