Would have been my response. Actually the only working computer I have atm is my server. I'm sure Citrix would have loved another W2K3 Domain controller complete with DHCP, web, and FTP servers popping up on his network.

No... something more along the lines of Workgroup: Pirate_Software, Name: Warez B0x.
Lets see how corporate IT takes to that one ;)

When you say "we" noticed the new workgroup. Who specifically is the person you are referring to? You?

Why did that person need to get the girl in "a heap of trouble maybe even fired"?

A private chat wouldn't have sufficed?

She could have just told them no she has no personal laptop to use. Then it would be up to them to supply the machine or pay her to do nothing but paperwork. I had this problem too, except I willingly brought my own laptop to use for work. I needed a machine and my boss was just too busy to get around to ordering one for me. I told him I was using my personal computer, and that I loaded the company Anti Virus on it and he didn't like it and kept saying that's not good, I have to order you a laptop. Took him about 6 months but eventually he got it for me, lol. I didn't really use my laptop for anything except watching dvd's when I went on road trips and offloading digital pics while on vacation so there wasn't any worry for viruses.

Smart girl. She is 23, hot, and a hardware developer. She won't have any problem getting any job she wants.

I don't understand how they won't get her a computer. I can see one not being ready yet but just refusing is totally odd. Assuming she's a new full time hire they are probably paying her at least 60k you would think they could spend a few thousand to be sure they are getting the most out of the $1250 or so a week investment.

w0w, the computers they get for people here are about $400 computers, if not an old used 2-3 year old one that got passed down to the new guy

Why are you so happy about getting someone fired when it sounds like she is basically the victim of mistreatment if anyone is? True she has a profane name for her computer, but really.... is that SUCH a big deal? Did it hwurt you feweelings?

classic example of why we should not let personal machines into the building.
Not to mention the virus and other numerous security problems it can cause.

exactly my question. Is this "we" just you? You couldn't have just talked to her?

:disgust:

I don?t what to get anybody in trouble and am not happy at all. Yes its a big deal, we are not a small company where something like this can slide.

but she did us in IT a favor by demonstrating that the decision by upper management was wrong and dangerous.

no, it was me, another admin and our director working on a unrelated issue when it was discovered.

i dont think so. I told my director that even though she was making a "slap in the face" statement that it is her PC and can name it anything she wanted. i think she was just talked to. the good news is that the help desk has a pc for her now.
