if you get cancer in the states, do they not see that as life threatening and do chemo and all that for free? (canadian here)

Sadly no, here in the states middle class and lower class with no income are expected to just die when it comes to these sort of things. No help at all from anyone, hospitals will refuse to do any treatment on them. Sad really.

that is bullcrap and your commie butt knows it
piss off troll

It isn't bull crap, if you are poor you don't get free cancer treatment. You are expected to just die off.

My mom was diagnosed with it a few years ago. She went through a round of minor chemo (for a year or so), went to the best cancer treatment center in the area (USC Norris), and apparently it's all gone and she's back to normal condition (thank God) and is back to work. AFAIK, all we had to pay was the deductible since my mom had a PPO under Children's Hospital LA where she works.

So yeah, there certainly are cases where people who get cancer in the "states" are treated.

Well, I was sick and I didn't get any help from anyone. I still haven't paid the medical bills either because I can't afford them. The medical bills weren't that much either. Luckily I now have a job that has insurance. The insurance does help cover the cost of expensive medication that I currently have to take. Why can I get meds from Canada for half the cost. I'm not complaining I can get them cheaper from there, but it should be cheaper here.

Another program she can look into

Listen, if I were you, I'd get on the phone and start calling every hospital, cancer foundation, clinic, assistance program, and cancer organization in the phone book -- or that I could find online. I'd setup a script, and I'd start telling the story, and I'd ask for help. I'd be persistent and kind, but I'd also be firm and try to talk to as many people as possible. If you talk to the right person you will find some kind of money or assistance.

Tons of these hospitals and foundations are endowed out the wazoo to help people out. I'd also find out about governmental assistance programs/medicare, or even attempt to purchase a high priced policy (some high-risk companies will sell a policy to cancer patients). Hospitals overcharge the cash paying client (typically), so even having a crappy and expensive insurance policy or government insurance is better than none.

I'd write my Senator, my Governor, my Congressman, my State Rep as well. I'd call churches, priests, pastors, and international charity and religious organizations.

Basically, I wouldn't stop until I got the help I needed. Good luck, and I hope your friend wins her battle.

I have no idea how much treatment for something like this costs, but I've figured that if there ever was a time, now would be it. I just really don't know what to do, and feel really really bad right now.
she needs to help herself first. there are ways and means for her to get treatment.

Yea, and for the record, she's only 17, turning 18 in August. So theres no way she's in the same boat as a 60+ year old, who might say "I'll just let it be".

She's only 17 so that means mommy and daddy are on the hook for her medical bills.

clinicaltrials.gov

If you get accepted into a clinical trial and if you do receive treatment, in most cases it's free.

Our leaders are a compassionate bunch of bastards, and since they have health insurance, they don't give a damn about someone that can't afford it. No insurance and cancer in the US is a death sentence. Ain't this a great frigging country?

I don't remember reading anywhere in the Constitution that everyone should be provided with free healthcare. Seriously... were we to offer that, who would pay for it?

Will it be more of the same old... rob from the rich and/or hard working to give to everyone? I don't have health insurance. I cannot afford health insurance, but I pay, pay pay for others... here legally or not... to have it on my dime. I would much prefer to have those taxes back to insure myself.

and I lived in a country with socialized medicine for 8 years. the system is abused, the doctors are overworked, no one is accountable for anything and there is a waiting list for all but immediate emergency treatment. and... it still doesnt cover everything. many ppl i spoke to there would have preferred to have their tax money back to privately insure themselves, too.

It is not the government's responsibility to ensure your survival and treat your illnesses, it is yours.

But when most of your population can't afford to provide healthcare for itself you know there's trouble.

Who in the fvck said most? IIRC, it is only 40million that don't have insurance. Now, my math could be entirely wrong, but is only (roughly) 13% of the US population.

And may people be reminded that the US is where some internationals come to receive the very best in cancer care. Hell, I know of a teenager who had Ewing's Sarcoma in Ethiopia. He tried to get care in Europe, but ended up coming to America where he participated in a NIH clinical trial and all of his treatments were paid for. He has been free of cancer for close to a year now.
