I just don't get Woody Allen....

So I've just watched a certain movie by Woody Allen and I found the guy very annoying and not funny at all. The jokes were mildly funny. I know the movie was a "romantic comedy", but still, I've yet to see something good out of this guy....

Why do people like Woody Allen so much?

Plus it creeps me out that he married his (adopted) daughter, who also happens to be 35 years younger than him.

He's painful, but I'd rather pummel my testicles with a hammer than watch anything Bill Murray has been in since Ghostbusters. He has a cult following but IMO the movies he's in all suck terribly bloated horse balls.

i never 'got' Woody Allen either and he has always annoyed the hell out of me.

lol... the guy is not funny. The only semi-decent jokes were related to the off-beat filming style and the breaking of the 4th wall...

Woody Allen is a genius, even if his movies are uneven (not too surprising since he makes one a year). The early Allen movies are just side-splitting, and Manhattan and Annie Hall are appropriately considered two of the best films of the 1970s (the latter won Best Picture, but to me Manhattan is the better movie). His more recent movies are not as strong but he has made some great ones in recent years, including Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

All of that said, he is a creepy guy and I don't condone the whole Soon-Yi thing. I am just willing to separate the man from the art, and he is among the most talented, most prolific modern filmmakers.

i dont care for him much either. i watched, i think, 3 or 4 of his movies from netflix and....well, meh.

So, other than a few exceptions, do you really enjoy his movies or just wish that you really enjoyed them; I mean, if you get one ready to go are you stoked and excited or just feeling somewhat compelled to watch it because you think you should?

Total peon, I consider myself to be pretty well versed when it comes to movies but if you asked me to name you a movie with him I'd pull a blank. I don't get his acting style, his jokes, his looks. Don't see anything special in what he does/presents himself.

I don't watch all of them - I select them based on critical acclaim as they come out. I have seen all the famous Allen movies, but not all of the recent ones. I do really enjoy them - IMO Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona were both tremendous recent Allen films.

I think a long time ago some elite (but eccentric) NY socialite once saw a Woodie Allen movie and actually liked it, and told their friends about it at their swanky A-list cocktail parties in the Hamptons. Not wanting to seem unhip or offend their host, they professed to loving the movie as well--some even called Allen a comedic genius-- even though they had never seen it. Pretty soon this talk spread across the most desirable cocktail parties across the urban landscape--particularly New York. Allen became the greatest movie director with a resume of movies a mile long almost noone has every actually seen, much less enjoyed.

It helps Allen that his supposed movie genius dovetails nicely with NYC's infatuation with itself. If Woodie Allen was some mormon from Utah and made the same exact craptastic movies, he'd be laughed out of Hollywood.

You can't be "well versed when it comes to movies" if you aren't familiar with Annie Hall or Manhattan. Even if you don't like them, they are historically significant films that most critics agree are modern classics.

I was waiting for someone to say that. I honestly just can't stand seeing him on screen. You'd have to strap me down to a chair in order to sit through his performances, I don't care how significant they were.

I laughed and would mostly agree, though I suppose their must be some exceptions, like Don Vito.
