Have never been a Luger's fan (have tried to be), but that may be somewhat related to being less of a carnivore than most.

Don't get me wrong - I enjoy a truly excellent steak, but at most perhaps once to twice a year. The steak at Luger's is good, but the service leaves a lot to be desired; and in the end, leaves a bad taste in my mouth (no pun).

I much prefer the rest of the dining experience to meet or exceed the quality of the food itself.

all overpriced food is truly overrated.

i went to this italian place that was $45 a person last week. i got this mushroom pasta dish that was decent. "good" is not really the appropriate word. i'd probably eat it again if it were $25 cheaper. but $45 is outrageous.

and half of my friends paid the $45 for pizza.
If it's overpriced, then yes. Absolutely. That of course does not mean however that all higher priced restaurants are overpriced.

As far as well-priced Italian Restaurants in the city are concerned, you might consider Sotto Cinque.

my options are limited since i only eat at kosher restaurants. 🙁

and no, not all higher priced restaurants are overpriced. but this one definitely was. there were more college kids eating with us than us young professionals. had i known that they'd be paying so much, i'd have chosen a more affordable restaurant near times square (my most favorite dessert -- it has the best desserts ever).

Me too. 🙂
The Prime Grill is Kosher. 😀

huge differance between a $10 and a $20 steak.
Some differance between a $20 and a $30 steak.
little differance between a $30 and $40 steak.

In my opinion , the food itself cannot justify above $35, it has to be all service and atmosphere.

I'd have a hard time paying over $20 for a steak let alone $65. When I go to a place to eat it's usually to order something that I'm not able to fix at home (or willing to go through the hassle of preparing)

You should try Ruth's Chris then (if you haven't already). The service is awesome, the majority of the waitresses are hot and the steak is as good (better IMO but I seem to be a deviant in this regard) to that of Luger's.

No freakin way IMHO. I went to two different RCs and they both sucked. First one burnt my steak to a crisp. I couldn't send it back since I had a play to see and was running late. I gave them a second shot at another place and the steak tasted just like a piece of meat. Nothing special about it.

Flemming's is yummy, they have a $70 steak there too... but I don't think it's worth THAT much... great atmosphere though

Ack! You went to Flemings? I was going to lump them in with RC.

I asked for a porterhouse medium rare. They sent it to me burnt to a crisp and well done. I sent it back. Then they sent me one basically raw. The top and bottom was brown but the inside was completely raw. I split the thing in half and turned it inside out. You wouldn't be able to tell it was cooked like that. By then I had enough sides to not even bother eating it. Fortunately, a friend was taking me out so it didn't cost me anything.

I'm a little bit of a steak snob but is it unreasonable for steak places to cook steaks medium rare without having any problems?

Which RCs did you go to? I've been to the one on W51st and 7th in NYC many times and I've always gotten great service and superior steak. I didn't think it differed that much at others.

That one and the one in Lincoln Harbor in Hoboken, NJ.

I couldn't tell how good the first steak was because they burned it to a crisp even though I asked for it med rare. The second time, it was just a piece of meat. Nothing special. For the price I paid, Morton's is much better. Morton's is also very consistent in their quality wherever you go.

So is Ruths Chris. Being a business traveller I've eaten at Ruths Chris all over the US, and they are not consistant at all. The best steaks I've had are at Ben Bensons, Frankie and Johnnies, and Sparks.. all in Manhattan.

I did not pay. 🙂

Everyone pays in some form or fashion. So what did you do, manwhore?
😀

Nah, I was out with a few friends, one really rich dude picked up the tab for all of us.

Have. I'd place them in the same class as Luger's, but again I do not eat steak all that often.

ruth's chris?

Rib Eye, rare + side baked potato with everything + side brocolli = heaven.

Ruth's Chris was good the first time I went there. I haven't liked it as much since then.

I still think Stoney River makes the best steak in Atlanta.

I have to agree with this. Ruth's Chris is Ala Carte as well. At Stoney River, $25 gets you the filet with sides. If you get the filet, you *have* to get the japanese horseradish on it. (If they still do it, this was 4+ years ago)

*EDIT*
Another thought here, for ~ $65 you can get ALL the meat you can eat at Fogo de Chao in Buckhead.
http://www.fogodechao.com/
If it's made of meat, they most likley serve it 😀

Fogo de Chao is awesome. Expensive, but well worth the trip.

If you like Brazillian in Atlanta the best place to go is on Roswell Rd. Carro de Boi (sp?). It has a 13.95 week day special till 6'oclock for unlimited meat. It may not be fogodechao quality but its close (from what I've heard from Brazillian friends).

I don't recall paying more than $10 for any dish, period. Everyone has different priorities, and for me food is the lowest on the list, which allows me to save up for other things to spend money on. Being a semi-veginterian helps, cuz my meals are not limited to those including meat of some sort. thanx for heads up tho, i would let everyone around me know Chops is not the place to bring their friends too 🙁

every time I go to the Keg I wonder why people pay so much for steak that tastes like well cooked grocery store meat with moms secret sauce on top ... NOT WORTH THE $ !!!!!

The Keg is the worst steakhouse I've ever ate at. Flavorless tough meat.

I personally find the Keg steaks to be very good, especially for the price. Other places in Seattle I like are the Metropolitan Grill ($30-40ish per entree) and Wild Ginger (also $30-40ish I think).

I do agree that nothing compares to a good home-cooked steak, but it is nice to have someone else do all the work for you.
