I have a mate who failed an entire year of engineering after getting hooked on WoW...

He's a smart bloke, never picked him as the addictive type, but yeah...

If i recall correctly, he missed one of his final exams because he stayed up until about 5am the night before playing WoW, asked his sister to wake him before the exam and she slept in...

I just don't have the attention span to get addicted to a video game, thankfully

it's not the game, it's the personality. If it wasn't WoW, it would be something else. Everything in moderation...

My brother failed his freshman year of college and lost his scholarship while playing Quake 2 on Microsoft's "TheZone." Now he does air conditioner/HVAC repair/installation and plays WoW.

My story has no point.

It has nothing to do with the game.

Replace WoW with partying and you get the general failure story of liberal arts majors...

I'm sure you can find people in med school or successful engineers that played WoW too.

Some idiot was on the radio the other day blaming video games for the fact that he flunked out of college. I am sure Jack Thompson is recruiting him as a poster child for another branch of his anti-game campaign as we speak.

Lol, I was addicted to Netrek while I was in school. Scraped through school, barely. So now I am addicted to other games, but at least I don't play it at work...

he got kicked out of uni for a 'cooling off' year, and blew his chance at taking that year up at another uni, so sadly i don't think he learned jack from it :(

I know many that bash WoW, but at the same time they waste about the same hours as the average player on forums and doing other pointless things.

Everyone thinks WoW will lead to losing focus on everything else....the same can be said for almost any game; video or not and many past-times.

Agreed. If your not on your computer, your watching tv, playing xbox, or out with friends... you choose how you live your life. If you wanna play WoW, if that makes you happy, then fine. And everyone else can shove it. (I hate WoW btw)

I've had a higher GPA in high school during the semesters that I played WoW. I got home, did most of my homework/studying and played WoW for the rest of the night.

Does his uni only have 1 grade a year?

He doesn't get 2 or 3 grades a year, a quarter or semester system.

Counterstrike almost took me down my freshman year. It was my first experiance with broadband and I had so much fun playing with my friends back home who weren't in college. Luckly I'm good at getting stuff done(and done well) when I need to.

How do you guys stick to one game that long? I can play a game for 30 minutes at most before saying damnit, let's do something. I tried going to one of those LAN parties once or twice but that's just a disaster with all the idiots, I have more fun playing for that 30 minutes at home.

Two semesters, but it's a pretty prestigious place, and they frown on you failing every unit you take over the year ;)

I tried WoW on a 10-day trial and got bored after 4 days. I dont understand what is so special about that game.

I know that I have an addictive personality. I will find something I love and go crazy and just no stop doing it. That's why I avoid games like WoW.
