I have a mate who failed an entire year of engineering after getting hooked on WoW...

Same here. However, perhaps having played MMOs before allows me to find the game less captivating, as it seems those new to MMOs are instantaneously addicted. :p

Did you just LAN with random people or your friends?

If they were random people, then LAN with some guys you know, or if they were your friends, find smarter amigos.

Also, most of the games I play require more than 30 minutes for a satisfying game session, excluding games on the DS.

Yea, I'm really lost in life. Failed 3 semesters of college in a row, neglected signing up for a 4th, have no job. A part of that was addiction to the mmorpg runescape (i... know... I know..) I'm 20, with the mind of a 17 yearold.

I had other very bad stuff going on too, like parents got separated + divorced, moved four times(downgrading houses, college), and my family almost went bankrupt, and my dad cheated. I'm not sure if i was addicted to the mmorpg, or if I would have done anything to escape the BS of life that I am still going through. I also have financial debts from failing because of grants. No motivation to get a job, hating life.

*sigh*...

Not sure why I ranted it just struck a chord...

Wow is addicting and unlike most games it requires a LOT of time and a LOT of dedication to your Guild in order to finish raids. The game by itself is made to require a lot of time and a lot of cooperation and a lot of dedication to succeed and all that required an inordinate amount of time that people realize once they are already highly invested in the game and their guild. The amount of time invested in the game increases and increases and the ability to justify not playing so much when your guild is depending on you and encouraging you to help more and more becomes more and more difficult.

Replace WoW with partying and you get the general failure story of liberal arts majors...

I'm sure you can find people in med school or successful engineers that played WoW too.

Yup, my friend at my CC took 30 units of science classes, while playing WoW for 6-10hours a day, and maintained a 3.4GPA.
He got into UCLA and UCSD's bio-engineering program.

And I thought I wasted a lot of time playing Quake Team Fortress in Engineering school.

My college friend defies the golden triangle rule. He has a girlfriend, plays WoW, and gets B's and A's in his upper level courses. Usually it's only 2 of 3 that you can accomplish well but he can do all 3.

I played until lvl 33 or so and got bored. My bro plays on my account and I'm paying for it still! He plays nearly every waking hr on it. I don't mind too much as he does well in school, trains 3-4x a week and is British Champ in his class. He even has a gf and he told me the other day his gf's best mate also fancies him! He's only 12 so he can't party...

I admittedly did spend a few long 8hr marathon (for me) sessions playing it :p. Played like from 10 till 6 :p, then went to work f0cking tired! It is fun when playing with mates but less when not for me.

I started college addicted to Quake3. Played it all the time. My GPA was much lower starting out in college than it was in high school. Quake3 started to die when I was a sophomore and the university implemented a packet shaper which destroyed my ping times. I quit Quake3 and my GPA went above 3.5 every semester and stayed there. These games can kill your academic performance.
