I know there's a sticky on top, but I am still not sure which one is better. I've 2 cards at home right now, and I want to install the better one in my system, which one I should use?

9600 or Ti4200?

Thanks

Install the 9600. It's a DirectX9 card. It's got 128mb of video memory. Try overclocking it a little too, especially if it's actively cooled.

Yea, I notice that also, the Ti4200 doesn't support DirectX9

But I was just looking at the memory, it looks like the Ti4200 memory operates at a higher clockspeed. I wonder if that can compete with the 9600.

Most of the Ti4200s were great Overclockers, so I think you will get better fps with it, but not all the Dx9 eye candy.

I would install the Ti4200

if you can get the 9600 to pro speeds, it will spank a ti4200. if not, turn on aa/af and it will spank any ti4600 with aa/af on.

How important is dx9?

Almost every new game uses dx9...

They do huh?

What makes you think that either of these cards can run a new DX9 game?

eh! This is weird...
People suggesting GF4 Ti 4200 in reply while the vote showing 9600 is a better choice.

Both card run aprox the same performance, but the 9600 got 128meg( that help) and got dx9 support( that help too)

the ti4200 is a great card, but now it WAS a great card because you have this 9600.

Sell that ti4200, its still worth a good buck or 2.

just an exemple for dx9 support, you wont be able to run the sims 2 with low settings with the geforce, but with the radeon it will work, you will see the dx9 effect

The Ti4200 is about equal to a 9600 Pro with no AA\AF. I'd overclock both and see which is faster, or better yet just use both and see which you like more.

Not a listed option but if it were me I'd sell both of 'em and pocket the change towards a better card. Of course that's assuming I had 2 cards and 1 system.

2 cards, 2 systems.
The GF4 Ti4200 is currently resided in my AMD 1.4ghz system, and my Radeon 9600 is currently resided in my AMD64 3200+ system.

I had a 9600Pro with 256MB memory and a Geforce Ti4200 128mb on my former systems.

From the benchmarks the 4200 and 9600 are pretty much the same in pcmark2004 benchmarks. Performance wise in War3 they are pretty much the same. However I can't get the Ti4200 to run 3dmark2005 while the 9600pro got about 1550 =/.

However I returned the 9600 to upgrade to a 6800 since it was bought with a new system, the 6800 is a bit buggy tho.

I would suggest the ti4200 if you've got the AGP x8 version if not go for the Radeon 9600 especially if it's pro.

My bad I did not see in your first post that the ti4200 was 64mb, that changes everything go for the ATI card.

9600, if anything for HL2. I'd be interested in seeing some Doom 3 benchmarks comparing these two cards.

DX9 is very important these days though. The 9600 will probably be a little slower than the 4200 in DX8 games, but overclocking will probably compensate for that (the core should hit pretty high speeds).

FarCry? H-L 2? Don't they run faster on 9600? And they're also playable (on low res ofcourse) on that card.
