I have 2 computers...am I sick?!?

Ok, trick question.

I do have 2 main systems, both pretty much standard fare with today's hardware. One (Main) is top of the line, the other (Alt) is top of the line minus 1 year. It usually gets Main's hand me downs when I upgrade.

This has been normal practice for about 4 years now. I also have practice machines...the Linux box (Alt minus 1 year) and a POS box, (running BeOS now).

I am upgrading again when I get back home, so alt will have some new (to it) goodies, and Main will be busting at the seams! (OK, I do find it sorta strange that I have names for my systems...hmmm)

My co workers do not understand my reasoning for having two fully functioning computers. My main reason is to have one to surf, Quicken, email, alt EQ toons, etc., while the other is surfing, newgroups, Main EQ toon, playing "insert game here", work stuff, etc.

The "other" systems mainly sit, humming, eating up the kwH. Fiddle with the Linux box for 5 hours or so...finaly get email to work...fiddle for anohter 6 hours, finally get Netscape to show a webpage...incorrectly...but hey, it found the fraggin page!

The BeOS box just sits there, crying. Looking spectacular, hoping to be an MP3 server one day. If only a Pentium 100 would encode faster!

I guess I like to multitask.

I have one main computer, a crappier computer and 2 laptops.

The main is for playing games and pretty much everything. My good laptop is used for wireless internet and aim and such when I'm playing games on my main computer. The crappy one is for spare emergency parts and stuff like that. My other laptop is from work and I use that only for work and emergencies since it sucks big ones.

I have a 1.8 GHz P4 in my main system. A 1.6GHz P4 in my second system. And I have a 900Mhz laptop. Thankfully the wife has taken over the laptop so I don't feel bad for having three systems.

i feel left out, i only have two system:

main rig - P4 1.4Ghz, 256ram, 20gig HD
laptop: Duron 1Ghz, 312ram 20 gig HD.

My main rig is about 1.5 years old without any upgrades since I got it. I'd like to build a server, but than I'd have three computers which my dad thinks is retarded seeing as I am only ONE person with ONE set of hands and eyes.

I have a main system (Athlon Tbird 1.2ghz, 512mb ram, 160gig RAID array, Windows XP Professional); new laptop (Athlon 1.2ghz, 512mb ram, 20gighd, dvd/cdrw, Windows XP Home); iMac (400mhz, 512mb ram, OSX.1.5); iPaq 3650 running Linux (+Compactflash sleeve with 128mb card); Powerbook G3 500mhz 128mb ram 12gig hd, but dead daughterboard which I will buy one day (costs about $200) which will run OSX.2 by then; I-Opener running FreeBSD, 1.2gig hd, 64mb ram (in pieces right now till I find a good use for it to be on ); Sony VAIO (bad video RAM, P3 500mhz, 128mb ram, 9gig hd, but good everything else,probably going to put Win2k server on it so I can learn some Windows Server administration); Sun Sparc LX running SunOS 5.8? Haven't played much with it since I bought it a couple years ago; same goes for my Digital Vaxstation which I got half a year ago. That plus my ~6 x86 computers that are in pieces in my closet. You are no way close to sick, I have a disease... lol. I love it!

secondary rig- mostly my wife's, but also handy if someone drops by to LAN game with me

third is my multimedia/MP3 server- hooked up to my stereo via the SB Live daughter card.....best jukebox ever. Very handy for parties.

There is nothing wrong with having two computers. That way, you have a backup system to use when the other system is broken or busy! There are few things more boring than having to wait for a hard drive defrag, a full virus scan, or large download to finish.

Anyway, you wouldn't have this problem if you worked where I work. Most of the people on my staff have two computers in their office, and some of them even run their own servers

I really didn't mean for this to be a "looky what I got, mine is bigger than yours" type post. I just found it odd that my friends found it odd that I "use" 2 computers at a time. I thought that was the way the world works these days.

Come to think of it...even at work, I have a laptop sitting on my desk next to the 2 desktop computers (Dell is suck...one for unclass and the other for the spooknet)

Then again, I work side by side (managing a 7000+ node network) with people who don't even own a home computer :Q

Nice rigs you guys...my main is still a 1.2 Gig Athlon on an Epox Mobo that can't be turned off (it wont power back up for like 12 hours...stumped me....)

My alt is a Althon 600 and my Alt Alt is a Celeron 300A (450MHz...yeah right....never could get a 300A to 450 with any stability).

My POS is a Pent 100 (Bought Winter 1995...wow...that was a while ago...back when a 100 was the Shizzz. and FIC boards were da bombdiggity..PA2007?)

My alt POS is a 368 something....running Win 3.11. Got it for free and it just sits in the corner.

My new system will be a P4 2.4b, looking for good mobo now...IT7 anyone?

I'm single and have five.

One is the email/web server, one is the domain controller, one is my "everyday" machine, one is my gaming machine, and one is running Win95 because I programm EPROMS with it and the parallel port driver for the programmer won't run under the NT kernel.

However, just today I dcpromo'ed the web/mail server and moved FSMO roles to it to decomission the first DC. So I guess that means I have 5 but only use 4.
