Yeah, its funny how only some people get the claimed 20kbps speeds...

Zero problems with steam here. But then again, Im not a newbie.

Love Steam, I was ticked that Need for Speed Shift wasn't available on Steam since I hate dealing with DVD's that need to be in the disc drive...etc. I also hate patching games because Steam has spoiled me by handling that automatically.

Typically 1.0-1.5MB download speeds here, so that helps. Steam isn't perfect though, and I do have some complaints but they're not enough to make me long for the days of installing everything manually.

well Steam sometimes doesnt update all the games for some reason. even some big games dont get patched for weeks or months until after retail versions do. in fact I think there is a list of games that have never received their latest patch. in might not be Valves fault but its still an issue that happens when dealing with Steam.

i don't hate it or love it. after you download the game, which is the most annoying part, i think you have the option to make a backup of it

Idk... When I download games I usually get them at 2Megabytes/second. Just sucks that it uses up all my bandwidth I am allowed for the month... :( That's not steams fault though... That's comcast.

what connection speed do you have and what is your limit for the month? I thought they had a 250gb cap on thier faster speeds which is plenty I would think.

It isn't plenty. I stream stuff a lot while I am downloading things. :( I have to watch what I download now.

In principle I might agree with you, but Windows Live has never failed me. It always connects first time, every time. Steam always has some bullshit issue preventing me from playing my games.

Cry more, baby. How do you think I felt downloading the 11gb F.E.A.R.2 files when my line is capped at 20gb a month? The only people who whine about 250gb caps are rampant pirates. /offtopic

Troll. Your vision is so myopic. You think the world is going to be the same in 10 years? You probably think 640k is more than anyone will ever need.

Typical dl speed was about 1MB/sec, sometimes more.
That's up to 21x slower than DVD and up to 36x slower than Bluray.

Yes, but the internet cannot get scratched, lost or eaten by my 3 and 1-year-olds. At 15Gigs Empire: Total War retail would have had me at the computer for a couple hours installing, while with Steam, I could buy it and leave for a few hours.

I rather like steam, and pretty much refuse to buy games that aren't offered on it now. I like being able to access all my games from wherever I have a connection.

I rarely get DL speeds below 600k/sec...usually 1.0 to 1.2 MB/sec.

I like it better more and more as time goes by.

the people that complain about Steam are one of several types -

the 'warez' crowd that isn't used to actually paying money for games

the 'anti' guy - people that bitch about anything without having a really good reason

people that have no idea how to make things better on their computer - plug it in and expect it to do everything right 100% of the time

You can make backups of all your steam games on CD/DVD, read the manual

Nope

Wrong again.

I'm a CompSci major, definitely wrong there.

LOL, ever tried using that "feature"? It's horribly broken. It takes over 10 hours for me to restore a handful of games from backup.

Even though I live in a large city (minneapolis, MN) I am glad to have Steam. It may not be perfect, but it is becoming very hard to find any kind of selection of games on disc anymore.
The only places to buy games are Target and Best Buy, and they only have a few games. I wanted to Sacred 2 over the weekend, but could find it nowhere. When it gets cheaper, I will download it from Steam. That said, it did take almost 24 hours to download Company of Heroes and the latest expansion pack. However I have a crappy internet connection that goes through a wireless router, so I don't blame Steam.

So Steam doesnt seem ideal to me, but with almost all the B and M stores selling mostly console games, I guess we should be glad to have it.

I have been a user of steam since its conception...forced of course :) couldnt play counterstrike without it. But as time goes on, and as others have said selection is horrible at most B&M stores. I resort to buying them online. I dont care for artwork or manuals. and discs dont matter to me..prefer to lose them. easier to install on each machine from steam. can walk away and let it install itself. Steam downloads fast where i am i was downloading aion at 1.5 mb/s last night
