I tend strongly toward staying away from them, as do most people with the means to do so. I will probably begin at some point working in soup kitchens or similar, though, as many are decent people who need some help.
BTW, most charities will say it's not time they need, it's money. If you do want to help out the poor and can throw money at them a typical food type place is much going to prefer $100 to a few hours of your time.
