I Hate Netgear

Well I have been having problems with using my netgear router to allow apache to respond to outside connections. So as im fooling around with the ports, all of a sudden, the configuration pages wont load, and I cant access the internet.

Nothing. Zip. I cant get to the configuration so that first off screws me, and to top it off all outgoing traffic is stopped. WTF.

So I call tech support, no support after 90days blablabla, gatta go online. Well I dont wanna stand for that so I go talk to the agent. Same BS. I say "Your product has FAILED, rendering me unable to USE your email techsupport, I would like to speak to someone who can help. 30 min later of the same bullcrap I gotta PAY $30 to speak to a qualified technition EVEN THOUGH THE UNIT IS UNDER WARANTEE. So fvck it, I hung up.

To top it off, I spoke to THREE people who can barely speak english. They all sounded the same, I even went to talk to the supervisor. I am SO pissed off right now. One of the dudes even said "You americans are so smart, why cant you just go to your friends house and send an email!" Fvcking outsourced support.

Right now im directly connecting to the internet, which I HATE doing. Friggin virses galore now...

Bottom line is now I gotta wait friggin 2 days to get a simple responce from their tech support telling me im a moron did you try this. I swear, im ready to call back up and say "GIVE ME TO SOMEONE WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH AS THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE" And verbally assault everyone until I get some free techsupport from someone who can friggin help me.

:| :| :| :| :|
After this I will NEVER buy another netgear product.

Yeah, my Netgear router is horrible too. Sometimes my router just stops putting out the internet for no reason. I have to unplug it and the cable modem, plug them back in, reboot and then it works again. They'll make it better soon enough. *Shrugs*

What do you mean by "fooling around with the ports"?

If you don't know what you're doing it serves you right.

What router are you using? I have the RT314 (old). Port forwarding is pretty straight forward.

Make sure you are using the latest firmware also.

Upgrade your firmware.

Tech Support has gone downhill with many companies. They seem to hire anyone who will work for $2/hr. I called SMC once 3 years back and the man said my unit was defective. I asked for help online and the online suggestion worked. Shows how much those tech people know.

I know what I was doing with the port forwarding, but it cutting out EVERYTHING doesnt mean its my fault. I was checking my port 80 settings if you wish to know. Its WGR614

No need to repeat yourself, we understood you the first time!

Yeah, I bet his reply will be "Pay the $30 and talk to a trained specialist"

Fvcking bastards. Hopefully Zonealarm will tie me over until if ever they fix it.

Ya, never pay the fee. 8 years ago someone in my family paid for the extra support from IBM and they couldn't solve it. What a waste of money.

Umm, no I am not using Linux. Ill be leaving zonealarm on full alert tonight with everything except my DC program allowed to access along side AVG going full blast. I feel so naked without my router blocking pings 🙁

If I were to be pissed off by that, I would just request a RMA and said the guy on the phone told me it was defective.

yeah.. my router is failing me on large file transfers.. seems to be common w/ my router (814v1).. but was informed that it's common for most.... and that was w/ any new firmware too.... but now it's developed into dying randomly for any firmware...

but my SMC is fine w/ large transfers, as is the linksys (dunno what model) a friend has.

Overreact much?

Why don't you just take it back to the place you got it and get a new one??? If its under warranty why not? Thats what I did a month ago... now I have a d-link with a lifetime warranty.

CompUSSR wont take it back I can assure you, I Dont even have the friggin receipt anymore.

EDIT: unless the RMA would work? And its defective so I hope i wont have to pay the %15, but id be willing to pay that if I get a new working one.

Well, if you want to, you could use Windows IPSEC to block off ports and traffic any way you like.
You can block of ICMP (ping) and maybe you won't feel so naked?

Under Administrative Tools --> Local Security Policies --> IP Security Policies on Local Computer

The only difference is your machine will be the one looking at the packets and not your router. Not much difference really. Once you've defined your policy, you can export it for later use, in case you ever format or want to install it on a friends or parent's computer.

I suggest you look up how to use it before fiddling with it, because it's not the most intuitive Windows option out there.

Looks like I'm in the same boat as you.

My Netgear Wirless card has failed, and they won't give me an RMA until I go through Tech Support. Of course after 90 days, you gotta pay for Tech support. Sigh
