if you worry about the people of the job, it's going to suck no matter what. If you like the job, just get the job done and go home. Don't worry about what other people think. As long as you're getting *your* job done. It seems like you are looking for a pat on the back for little things you do that aren't necessary that you do them. While that's not a bad thing to want, more often than not, you're going to get ignored for doing them anyway so you may want to just expect not to get recognized for going above-and-beyond --if you like what you're doing, anyway. It's just a job, though. Concentrate on getting the things done that you're being paid to do; do the things that you want to volunteer for (broken printer) but don't expect praise for it; don't plan on staying there long.

When it comes to things like the printer breaking or something, SOMEONE has to fix the printer. It HAS to get fixed. Why screw around waiting for the printer guy if you know how to fix it? Get it fixed and move on. Just like a lot of things. At my work, if I see that the floor needs to be vacuumed, why wait until the end of the week to do it? Get crap done, then take a few minutes and be proactive and vacuum the floor, not expecting to get a pat on the back. Like I said, sh|t's got to get done and it's better if someone ... you know... actually gets it done than someone standing around waiting for someone else to arrive and do it.

I'm babbling.

Anyway, just understand that you're there to do a job a few hours a day. Just go, do your job, and leave. The more you expect out of people, the more you're going to be let down. That is a universal constant. It never changes.

The title says it all....I started a new PT Job today, and I hate it.

I run my own business, Web design and PC repair, however it is just getting started
so I wanted to do something part-time to supplement things until I get on my feet with my business.

I applied and got hired for a PT Internet Store Assistant position with a local company that is 5 minutes away.

Pros:
1)They seemed really nice during the interview
2)Willing to be flexible with my schedule knowing I have my own business.
3)Although the pay is only $8.00/hr they mentioned that it would
include medical coverage because it would be 20 hours a week,
plus it is not much, but it is steady income and my other business
is sporadic right now even though it pays a lot more.

Cons: (First Day on the Job)
1) I get there-say "Good Morning" to the boss, she ignores me.
2) I go up to her, she says...."we can't give you the medical"
at 20 hours a week, but we probably won't use you more than 16 hrs a week anyway.
(Translation = keep me at less than 20 hrs....NO MEDICAL BENEFITS necessary)
She then says, "would you still like to proceed"? I decided to stay and give it a try.
3) I meet the lady who will train me, she's totally unfriendly and doesn't seem to like me being there much and is a total b**ch.
4) First thing, their printer won't print and I offer to fix it for them. I end up fixing it and getting it to run great. They say nothing.
5) I ask the lady who trained me today at one point if she liked her job, you should have seen her face like I had asked her if she liked baby vomit. Her reply was "I USED to, but not anymore because they make me do everything. I said, "that's why I'm here", she made NO comment and shrugged as if "whatever". Um...disgruntled perhaps?
6) I learned everything in a snap, and did a whole lot of extra things as well, taking initiative and getting everything done, and no one seemed to care.

There were a few more cons, but we will leave it at that.

What would you guys do? Its not like I'm desperate for the $ I just wanted something steady to do in my off time. The people there are NOT friendly or very nice for that matter and seem to almost resent my presence. I don't feel very comfortable or welcome. The job itself sucks, its monotonous and boring.

I'm thinking try it for a week, and if I still feel like this QUIT. I'm still looking for other work.

Or would you guys stick with it?

Any advice apprecitated, thanks.

If you don't urgently need the money, quit IMMEDIATELY. Use the time to research, look for another part time job where the people are decent.

You got screwed on your first day, heck I think it would be a good idea to go ahead and bail out.

doesnt sound like it would be a happy experience. if you dont really need the money you shoud figure out how to quit. just go in and be brave but dont insult them.

i vote LEAVE. i wonder if they even show any emotion when you quit. report back when you finish.

Is this appropriate? I haven't worked for someone else for so long, I have no idea
what the etiquette is.

Personally, I would feel bad about doing it this way, but I think I would feel worse
staying and putting up with the treatment.

Why are you so worried about their feelings? They have demonstrated no interest in yours. This situation is a classic "abuse" situation -- they treat you like sh1t right from the start, and if you stay, then really you're just demonstrating that you a sucker who is willing to take the abuse.

Basically the one question that matters is this:

Do you see yourself with great potential at that company, even if it will require sacrifice?

Most people are too self-centered and living in the moment to realize that, most of the time, it takes a lot of sacrifice and hard work to fulfill your dreams. Right now, your dream is your business. If this job does not directly help you fulfill that dream or you cannot see any real potential with that company in the future... well then, to the question regarding staying there, you have your answer.

You guys are absolutely right.

The fact that the people that all work there appear miserable and sullen should be
a big warning sign already.

and I don't like the "job" itself after learning it, it sucks.
No future potential, and no rewarding feeling after doing the job, as well as working
with a bunch of miserable old hags.

i would say go for another 2 days. That might have been a bad day, maybe their houses got robbed or their husbands were cheating on them or something. Else then quit. When you quit just tell them the truth. And on that note, you seem to be expecting compliments. You are there to do a job, not to be complimented all day. If it's the lack of praise that is making the whole job oppressive, than the problem is on your end.

No, its not the lack of praise- but rather the opressiveness and negative attitude of the employees. I've noticed this before whenever I went in there, but thought it may have just been a bad day as you said.
Other people I know have commented on the same.

I don't expect a pat on the back, but I DO expect to be informed correctly during my interview and not misled into believeing I'm getting benefits that all of a sudden I'm not.
I also don't need to be made to feel like a pile of dog turds would be more welcome there than MY presence.

You don't need a better warning sign than this. Sure-fire sign that the org is fvcked six ways to Sunday, and then some.

I agree with what most here have said. You should be looking for an 'exit strategy' soon. Be true to yourself, though. If phoning in or e-mailing doesn't feel right to you, don't do it. Think of the reasons you don't want to continue, think of a respectful way to say those things, then go in and tell them. I also agree that it would be good to offer to finish the day/week if they really need you ... touch of class IMO.

Good luck!

If you can afford to quit, quit.
They mislead you in the interview and it sounds like the job is going to go downhill from there.

I drafted a letter to them and will not be going in tomorrow.

Thanks AT for the support.

If you want to see the letter PM me, I would be happy to share. Would also
appreciate your feedback.

I also told them it was not necessary to compensate me for today.
That imo added a touch of class to it and kept everything diplomatic as well.

hey, no, get paid !! I know you think it may make them feel bad, but it really is not important, and you should be compensated for the abuse.

Forgot about that, you should get paid for the time spent. Training =! free time on the clock...

Lets add another CON to this....
The first hour that I was there and supposed to be getting paid, I wasn't! During the hour and 15 minutes I thought I would be paid, I was filling out employee paperwork and fixing the printer for free! I even installed Ad-Aware for them and ran it and found about 200 critical errors, the biach that was training me complained as to what I was "doing"??
I pointed out that they had Adware that needed removal....
She ended up shutting that off as if I didn't know wtf I was doing!

Come to find out this whole entire 75 minutes was NOT on the clock. They had me go clock in AFTER that!

So they actually owed me $32 for 4 hours of work, but got away with 75 minutes of it free. I could pursue it, but its not worth it...they can have it. Besides, there are so many things I could do with that $20 after taxes...gee...where to start?
