I hate my landlord.

He's a cheap bastard. Has a 12 unit apartment with ~$1100 each. He already paid for his mortgage. Only utilities I get are water. And its not good water. It has some chlorine in it, and if left alone for ~6 hours, it turns yellow on surfaces such as my dishes. I know there are regulations on water quality, but I think he barely met them.

The place is also a wreck. Bugs get in through the window because there are holes; under the front door as well. Apparantly, his son is the person fixing the building, but he's not doing that great of a job. If my upstairs neighbor goes to the bathroom at night, I hear it at 3am. She's not even stomping either. These walls are as thin as paper.

There is one washer and one dryer for twelve units, and about 30 people living here. Also, the laundry machine is broken. It ate my money after I put my clothes in. No note on it saying "Out of Order," and he was here checking up on it a couple hours ago. I called him about it, and said that he already knew it was broken. Just didn't bother saying anything about it. So here I am, 50 miles away from home, without a car, a $2 bus ride (which I'm not going to spend money on), and without a laundromat within a mile. No bike. Just my two feet. I have two loads of laundry too, I didn't go home last week. So now I have to wait until Saturday when I can go home and do my laundry.

I'm paying an average price for rent with two other roommates. The only upside I see about this place is that we live across the street from school, but a lot of people do.

The landlord drives a new BMW 5 series. Instead of using the money to fix this place up, or buying a new washer and dryer, he buys a 5 series. WTF is wrong with him. I've never seen a landlord with such bad practices. I can't wait to move into my own house. I hope I win the lottery tonight with my $5 birthday ticket, even though I'll have a better chance being struck by lightning thrice.

I'd like to move, but there's no place to go, but home. There are no places with vacancy within a mile. We have to ignore the problems.

Stick it out and someday you will have your own house which will be much better:)

Will he take some rent off if you fix problems in your apartment?

Well, if I knew how to fix it I would, but I don't. I doubt he'll take off any rent, or even reimburse my $1.25 I put in the broken washer.

Sounds like the typical student ghetto to me.

Inflated prices, shoddy workmanship, etc, etc... oh the stories I could tell.

I like my landlord. He is replacing all of the windows in my place sometime this month.

If I decided to evict you so I can put someone else in the apartment that would pay more money, you're not supposed to hate me right? I'm just trying to make money.

I'm just saying he's got money to spend (5 series), why is he screwing the tenants?

And I have every right to hate him for being so cheap.

You have 2 choices:
1. Move <-- my preferred choice
2. File complaints with local and state governments

You voluntarily moved into this place, or he forced you at gunpoint to sign the lease?

I don't think it'll help with #2. He's barely meeting regulations for anything. It was our fault moving in to a crappy place.

I just have to hope a nice place opens up soon, other than that, I can't do anything about it.

Seriously, those are some pretty petty complaints. Sounds like typical college housing complaints. Get used to it or pony up for more expensive, nicer, further-away-from-campus digs.

It looked like a nice place. Not like we had a chance to stay here for a week and try it out. It takes a couple weeks to see the flaws.

He probably didn't know about the problems before he moved, or perhaps he had no choice (he said there were no vacancies close by). Cut him a little slack.

T60: Sorry to hear about that. I think you should file a complaint against this guy, because it sounds like he's fvcking you over hardcore.

If you have renters insurance take him to court but even then there are regulations he has to follow to keep the place livable.

My old landlords were like that too. They drove very nice and expensive vehicles while the apartments were falling apart and looking like shit.

Check local laws dealing with apartments and what the landlord has to do to keep it up for the tenants.

Thanks encryptic.

I'm sorry if these things sound like "petty complaints," but my parents are freakin poor. I'm barely getting by with financial aid and grants. If I could move in to a nicer place that cost more, I would. My parents have rented their entire lives. I have never seen a landlord this bad.

I know nothing is perfect, but still, these problems can be easily fixed. I called him up and the only thing he told me to do was if I didn't like the place, move out. I don't have that option available to me though. I can't wait for another place to open up.

As N8magic said "typical student ghetto."

This guy has owned those apts for years. He's been screwing hard-working student just like you for years. He's treated everyone like
SH!T for years.

And people just like you continue to LINE UP, money in-hand to rent from him.

Why?

B/C it's across the street from school, that's why. :p

I'm sure he's in violation of at least a few health/housing codes. File a complaint with your city's Code Compliance unit.

He will not fix anything, ever, unless forced to.

Oh, move out soon. Good luck.

Ugh. It's landlords like that that give landlords a bad name. We ALWAYS make sure that our apartments are in great condition and usually get problems fixed within 24 hours. It's tougher than it sounds though, which is why a lot of them slack off.

Put a LARGE sign in your window advertising exactly what kind of problems you're having with your place to let future tenants know what they are getting into.
