Bank error in Bank's favor

I keep a close eye on my bank balance and recently it's been erratic. Note my thread about what bills not to pay?

My bank Hudson City Savings Bank recently changed its website and the information is now all messed up. I print out my statements (they don't send statements any more) and it turns out that my printouts don't match the information on the website. There's quite a bit of money that has disappeared from my account. I went over to the bank and yelled at them today - they looked up my account info on a totally different computer system and it had yet another set of numbers.

Worst thing is that they haven't credited me with my last two monthly disability payments. I contacted Social Security and they sounded like they were seriously upset. Maybe I'll find out what's going on?

Anyway, who can recommend a bank that has accurate account information online? And doesn't have ridiculous fees?

Thanks.

Any national bank should have accurate account information, but they are also the ones that tend to have stupid fees.

I have Bank Of America's basic checking and savings accounts. No fees as long as you do all your banking online or through an ATM (no teller). Works well for me.

Why, in this day and age, would anyone use a bank rather than a credit union? Credit unions have lower loan interest rates, generally the same or higher account interest rates, and are 100% free. Plus, most decent size ones have more than sufficient free ATMs. Service is FAR superior: I can talk to a person in under a minute if I call my credit union.

I see no reason to use a bank, and due to their BS fees and charges I never will again. I don't see an up side.

Looks like your bank was taken over by M & T:

A sad end for Hudson City Savings Bank

"At the dawn of the financial crisis, M&T Bank Corp. and Hudson City Bancorp were considered two of the best-run banks in the business. On Monday, M&T reaped the benefits of sailing through the crisis unscathed by acquiring one of the more unfortunate casualties, Hudson City.

The $3.7 billion deal more than triples the New York-area market share of M&T, a Buffalo-based bank with 725 branches that remained profitable throughout the financial crisis and maintained its dividend. Warren Buffett is one of its largest shareholders.

“In addition to making full financial and strategic sense, the geographic fit works quite well,” said M&T Chief Executive Robert Wilmers on a conference call Monday.

The deal, slated to close next year, would end 144 years of independence for Hudson City Savings. It’s the last in a series of stunning setbacks for the Paramus, N.J.-based institution, once such a market favorite that its stock price hit a record high the day after Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. filed for bankruptcy. That year, while big banks were feverishly trying to stay afloat, Hudson City’s earnings rose by 50%. CNBC’s Jim Cramer named CEO Ronald Hermance the “George Bailey Banker of the Year,” after the character played by Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life. Unlike most of its rivals, Hudson City didn’t require federal bailout assistance.

But actions taken by the government to rescue the banking system proved to be Hudson City’s undoing.

Problems you are experiencing may be because one system is trying to be integrated with another.

Probably want to make sure that they straighten everything out to your satisfaction, with documentation that that what you had with previous bank has successfully been transferred into new M&T bank account, before moving.

My bank has free checking, holds my mortgage and also has 3% interest on my checking acct - no minimum. That's why...

Two words: CREDIT UNION

I've been a member of my current CU for 33 years with no such problems. I pay NO FEES and have had none of the problems that you have reported. The only issue I have with my CU is that they push THEIR investments that make THEM money. I do my own investing.

Sorry to hear about your disability payments ... try to enjoy them while you can. As SS goes bankrupt and the Gov is unable to make debt payments SS disability will have to make cuts in benefits ... or make none at all.

Thanks, I appreciate that. It would explain the stupid problems.

My wife banks at old national and for years her balance is never correct, usually its higher than what its supposed to be, then they take it and it starts all over....i never understood how a bank in this day n age could not be dead accurate on your account balance....though in OP's case, merging banks, i could see it happening, but not from a long standing bank.

Credit Unions...fuck yeah! had mine at one since i was 18, never an issue. Although i don't think their % rates are all that by comparison.

May we ask what bank is that?

I use a Credit Union myself.

Local bank north of Green Bay Wisconsin. I didn't believe them until the first statement that showed the interest. Now there are catches but no minimum balance. Direct deposit and 10 DEBIT transactions required each month. Sweet gig considering Money Markets and CDs don't come close to it.

Oh and Free ATM fee reimbursement too.

When I was younger and paying all of that money in taxes and so on, I was absolutely sure that SS would be gone by the time I was old enough to collect anything. I don't know anyone my age mid-50's who expected that SS would still be in existence this long. We figure d it was $$ thrown away.

If it's any consolation - NO I don't enjoy disability payments. I'm disabled. I'm grateful but don't expect it to last.

The solution?

Credit Union's

MtnMan didn't bump this old thread - the person who bumped it has had their post removed. They registered just so they could post to this thread with a referral number to get a cash bonus from his/her bank. -Admin DrPizza
