after 4 hours of tryin to formatt a 40 GIG drive maxtor on disk managment on win2k , it says volume too big!!! freakin stupid drives. i have 2 of them and none of them work !!!! i cant even delete whats on them!! it wont let me. i am just gonna throw them in the garbage tommorrow morning.

I'll take them if you don't want them. I'll even pay shipping......lol. I'm sure I could get them to work. Even if I couldn't, I could always put a window in them and put them in my system for looks. My old WD with the window in it needs a replacement. I would try formating them with a linux utility, linux can format any disk.

lol i got dibs first man.

seriously try formatting them in dos though.

try deleting all the partitions, then formatting it.

I should have been the first one, but I got too caught up in trying to brag about my HD window. I guess that's what I get 🙁

Go to the OS forum and ask the Linux gurus. I always have to study up before I try it because I forget everytime. I never get around to learning linux. That's what happens when you game too much.

boot into dos with a win98 start up disk. at the prompt type "fdisk" then from there select the option to delete partition, then after youre done with that create a partition then itll say to format. reboot your computer boot into dos again and at the c: prompt type "format c:"

He's got two. We can share. He can send one to me and one to you metaphor 🙂 I at least tried to get in on the deal.

na seriously metaphor got first dibs. at least he is tryin to help you know. if things dont work out i will give it to him. i appreciate his help

also make sure all jumpers are properly set. you that 15 head and 16 head setting? sometimes changing that fixes things i dont know how but it just does. other than that u should try metaphor's idea of formatting in dos

i unplugged my original harddrive and pluged the maxtor in and rebooted usin win98 and it said no physical drives found when i tried to run fdisk!!! can it get messier than that!!

Have you tried using the maxtor on a different PC? One time my IBM wouldn't detect after my OS got all corrupted and I put it on another PC, installed Win2K on it and put it back in the original PC. It worked fine after that. I'm not sure why, but it worked.

hey i have the same F**** problem with the 80 GB i bought two days ago!!

I spent 16 hours doing clean format, format using fdisk, format using MatorPlusII, format using DOS, format using win98, win2000, winXP, on friends comp and it STILL doesn't F**** let me install Win2K. But it does work as SLAVE under Win2k. That's what i settled for. good luck to you.

What is up with all of these HD problems lately. Reliability and compatibility should be getting better these days. I never had any problems with my 3GB WDs that I bought back 5 years ago. Now we have all of these HDs failing and stuff. It is kinda pitifull. I think the only HD that I haven't heard anyone having problems with lately is the Seagates.

that wierd thing is max plus pushes me to partition my drive to 22 partitions. i wont let me do anything but that its rediculous.

i have a WD 8 GIG. thats where my operatin system is bootin from. never had a problem man. i have had it for 7 years. never had a problem. but maxtors, forget about it.
