i hate maxtors man!!!!

You should post your complete specs (mobo, CPU, etc...) so we can eliminate other potential problems. I suspect you have an older system? The limit before was 8gig so if the controller (or mobo setting) doesn't support LBA (or set to LBA), then it will come up with a message like that. If you are using the mobo IDE controller, try setting the drives to "Auto" or enable LBA.
 
they are on auto detect. and i think lba is enabled.
its a abit kt7a-raid with 1 gig amd. i got a wd runnin for my operatin system no problems what so ever. i think thats what we only need to know.

i tried to use the ata100 controller on the board earlier and that didnt work. i got everything installed correctly but everytime i boot while the maxtors drive are attached or even one is attached it crashes on start up. so i said forget the raid or ata100 controller and lets put it on a regular IDE and watch what goes on. absolute mess!

if all fails send it back to maxtor
 
mind if I radmin into your system and try myself. I havent had any issue before with formating large harddrives of any make.

I had a simular problem a couple of months ago with the same chipset on a EPOX 8kta3, but with WD 40 gig hard drives, and I was overclocking my processor even before I had an OP installed. Are you overclocking from the get-go, from 100 Mhz to 133 Mhz or higher?. I remember there was a problem with that chipset (VIA) and the WD drives. If you are overclocking, try the default value of the processor till you OP is installed.

This is just a suggestion, try an AEFDISK to wipe and reset your partitions, then do what others have mentioned and use a Windows 98se boot disk to format in FAT32. I have a specially made disk I use to prepare and format hard drives. If you want i can email it to you.

I have 12 Maxtor 40 gig drives running in various systems and have had no problems. I also have Seagates and IBM's as well, so I think there a all good drives.

i'm not sure if you answered the other guy's question, is it ATA/133 ? According to an article i read on another computer page, NTFS format is required for these drives? Not sure if thats what it said entirely. But that solved my problem. you might want to try using that. I actually did it through Windows i think.

ATA100 can support drives up to around 120gig, anything over that needs ATA133. It doesn't matter if its FAT32 or not, I have Fat32 formats on 100gig drives and its no problem, and his drive is only 40gig. Either its his harddrive or the mobo (if he has bad memory, it will do that too, like crash on start-up). Enabling S.M.A.R.T (in the BIOS, if the drive is attached to the mobo controller)for the harddrive may also help. Cables should be ATA100-133 compatible. Oh, and one more thing, if using the RAID controller on the KT7A-RAID ( a mobo I once had) under Win2000/XP, when installing the OS, you should have the latest Highpoint drivers in a disk and use the F6 option to specify additional devices.

As for Maxtor drives, I've owned almost all brands of harddrives and MAxtor is the most reliable. Just try the drives in a different mobo and if they still don't work, just RMA it if under warranty.

That sure is strange, FWIW I have a Maxtor 40GB D740 working fine on my KT7A-RAID running WinXPpro. Did you try formatting with MaxBlast?
 
Sounds like it`s either faulty,board problem or setup wrong,I`ve a Maxtor 40GB D740X and had not problems with setup in both FAT32 and now NTFS with WinXP .I agree Windows bootdisk is the easiest way of formatting it.

On some very old boards it can be a problem but normally easiest thing to do then is buy a Promise ATA-100/133 controller card.

Not hardly. Maxtor makes some of the best IDE drives on the market today. This thread just shouts user error. I would seriously consider that before pronouncing Maxtors drives as "cheap."


i unplugged my original harddrive and pluged the maxtor in and rebooted usin win98 and it said no physical drives found when i tried to run fdisk!!! can it get messier than that!!

There you have it. You've just identified one of the problems. Clearly you have the drive setup in the wrong configuration. Like the others said, check your jumpers, cable placement etc.

Good, don't mess with these. There's no need to set HDD's up in the BIOS these days IMO. Don't tweak what you don't have to tweak.

What does it say when it crashes? If you try to boot off a drive with no operating system you're going to a get a message stating that fact... As for the ATA100 controller, I'm guessing you mean a PCI daughter card. This is unnecessary with the KT7A...hell, my KT7 had ATA100! Jumpers are your friends...jumpers are your friends! 😉

no they are the regular maxtors when they were on sale at staples a year ago. they 7200 and ata100. some ppl got the 40 gig and other got the 48 gig.

i m not overclockin anything. it just pure 1 GIG of AMD on the abit kt7A-Raid.

ST4RCUTTER : i dont doubt that it could be a user error. but i have been playin with computers for a while now. i might not know all everything but i know alot. and the reason i am here is i need help. i am about to chuck those 2 drives out the window. so before i thought about doing that, i thought about comin here and check out any suggestions.

I always had problem with 2 maxtors drives when i was running on win 98 SE. i couldnt format or even do a chkdsk. it was hasstle.

i told you that the drive was on AUTO DETECT that means the jumpers should be ok and i think you realy cant miss pluggin a drive if you just took it out of the original and just plug it right in the maxtor. it takes a second man. brainless.


About the ata100 controller on board that didnt work. i pressed F6 to identify a raid + controller and i installed it and then it gets up and boots fine without any drives attached. i check in the device manager looks all good and pretty. now i plug my maxtor in and i boot up , it crashes on start up in win2k. i unplugged the maxtor and rebooted it booted up fine. yah for your info, i have my boot up disk is my a WD 8 gig resides on the IDE connectors and thats where i always boot up from. so i got my WD going to boot up and i hook the maxtors up , it crashes. i take them off it , it boots up fine. i hope i got all your doubts down, st4rcutter.
 
this is 100% user error, hardware isn't to blame.....

if you really don't know what you are doing, don't blame everything else.

yah i tried MaxBlast. when i went in to format and partition, it gave me an option to partition to 22 partitions ! it wont let me partition to 1. i tried to play aroudn with it , it didnt let me. so i went ahead and partitioned but still nothing showed up in my windows explorer. it was realy odd. The thing is i can see the drives in the device manager but i cant see them in windows explorer beside teh other symptoms. i tried everything i know.
