In Server 2003 and the offshoot WHS, raid drivers could only be installed with a floppy drive. You could not specify a location.

I see. I was able to install controller drivers from a CD but that was an add on card. Of course my WHS isn't a behemoth like Hayas, it's just a humble Atom based system with an itx Intel Mobo that cost me under a $100 without the 2 1T-Byte drives.

I had to slipstream raid drivers to get them to work during the WHS install.

By the way, raid is not officially supported on WHS, so you trying to do something that isn't supported really gives you no room to complain when it's a pain in the ass.

I ran into this putting XP on an HP ProBook 6555b. I just used a USB floppy to get the drivers added, they can be had for less than $20.00.

Use a slipstreamer for the drivers... problem solved for floppy.

Not so easily done with WHS (thought it is possible).

I actually still use a floppy drive. I have yet to build/own a computer without one. Great for installing RAID drivers, flashing graphics cards and stuff like that.

I use a bare floppy drive with a rounded IDE cable, used almost exclusively for BIOS updates for mainboards. I haven't put one in any PC I've built for 2 years now. Still, you gotta have one handy for just such a need

I had the same amount of fun last week. I was supposed to rebuild a production server, everything worked until I had to build the new partitions. Somehow the disk was able to blow away the old partitions, but it could not build new ones. So, I spent a good day scrambling to get the drivers working so I could rebuild the production server asap.

I've been really pleased with the ease of installing Windows 7. I install the OS (5 minutes of my time, then walk away). I come back when its done and start windows update which downloads all the drivers I need. Its amazing.

I have the brand new upgrade disc that I've never used before, still in shrink wrap. Went to install it and it needs to install OVER an older version. It's not like the older upgrades I've used where you just insert the old OS disc and it verifies it... noooooo. It needs it to be installed first! WTF?

So I opened my brand new Vista disc as well, and it only asked for my XP disc to verify.

Yeah, so I am now using Vista instead of 7.

How many of you have actually written your own OS?

I have, albeit a very simple one for an embedded controller. It had priority threading, a file system, communication, error logging, message passing, etc.

Not yet, but I think I will next semester. I'm taking an Operating Systems class next semester.

EDIT: I did code part of an operating system...the context switching and priority threading, but the majority of it was already there.

I did try the slipstream, but it didn't take. That happens sometimes with WHS. It's a bitch that the drivers have to be installed twice, but at least I have the OS files copied over.

I should have a floppy drive somewhere, but you don't want to know how many boxes of stuff I'd have to go through to find it.

Bit the bullet and ordered a USB floppy and made sure it was one which would be recognized by Microsloth. Should be here right before or after Christmas.

I have a compaq lappy running 32 bit vista and I'll install Win 7 x64. No doubt that will kill some time
