I bought a bare bones Poweredge T110 and tried to install WHS on it. Damn thing BSOD'ed on me a bunch of times. Turns out that I need to install controller drivers. Twice.

So...
FINALLY got the files copied over properly and now I find a need A FRIGGIN FLOPPY DRIVE TO LOAD THEM!!!!!!!!

I think (hope) I still have one- somewhere. WHS is built on Server 2003 which is XP (kindasorta). v2 of WHS ditched drive extender which sucks so no sense going there.

What a pain in the ass.
 
I actually still use a floppy drive. I have yet to build/own a computer without one. Great for installing RAID drivers, flashing graphics cards and stuff like that.
 
Don't you still have a floppy drive in your spare parts from yesteryear? I think the death of the 3.5" floppy is greatly exaggerated. You should at least still have one for backwards compatibility.
 
I've been really pleased with the ease of installing Windows 7. I install the OS (5 minutes of my time, then walk away). I come back when its done and start windows update which downloads all the drivers I need. Its amazing.

Windows has been easy for some time.

Even a lot of linux distros are pretty easy...

Installing gentoo from scratch took some time though.

How many of you have actually written your own OS?

I have, albeit a very simple one for an embedded controller. It had priority threading, a file system, communication, error logging, message passing, etc.
 
Funny... CentOS 5 installs on a PowerEdge T110 just fine with ZERO driver issues. Just patch it up when you're done, and you're good to go.

Does this mean that installing Linux has actually become easier than installing Windows?

That's really cool, I've compiled my own linux distro ISO, but nothing like that.
 
not to make light of your frustration hayabusa, but your post made me chuckle. 🙂 as was stated above, your best option for installing without a floppy drive would be slipstreaming the drivers.

not really, they're roughly equal now if you put them against OS'es around the same time.
