stop trying to sell with a fargin' monthly payment! I told you I don't care!!!!!!!!!!

I TOLD YOU I DON'T CARE ABOUT MONTHLY PAYMENT, I WANT TO SEE THE PRICE OF THE CAR.

What is so bad about negotiating (or making) monthly payments? Some (most) people cannot afford to simply buy a car outright.

That salesman should've sold you the car based on the price and then put a $1500/mo payment into your contract.

Edit: fixed bold tag

because getting a loan based on payments and not the cost of the car is idiotic. the salesmen will ask what you can afford a month. you say $400. so they get you a loan for 96 months at $400 on a $14000 car. OR they give you %23 when you can get 5%

I still don't understand why you all keep blowing off negotiating on the monthly payments. Some people (me included) just can't afford to pay more then a couple hundred a month. Am I not allowed to buy a car because a low monthly payment is what's important to me?

For $300 a month you could be paying $15,000 for a car or you could be paying $20,000 for the same car. Using monthly payments allows them to hide information from you, because you have a monthly payment in mind and you're willing to pay that. Nevermind that you'll be making payments for 7 years and you paid MSRP for the car - they gave you the monthly payment you wanted.

You need to look at buying a car as three separate transactions - trade-in, purchase, and finance. Don't let them combine them. You should know ahead of time what you expect for each, so you should be able to figure out what your monthly payments will be before you go in.

my god. we can't make it any easyer to understand. continue to go in and get screwed over and pay a LOT more for a car.

you go in and say you can afford $350 a month for a car. they say great! they give you the car at $350 a month for 96 months.doing this they can hide the fact you paid $24k for the car at whatever interest.
When if you went in and did it on the price of the car and got the same interest you may have 4-5 years of payments instead of 9

because you can probably finance it yourself at your bank with a lower APR? there's a reason that every car salesman asks if you want to finance.

If you know the exact car you want, there's no need to go to the dealership other than to pick up your car. Deal only with the internet sales or fleet manager over the phone or email. Don't trade in your car, sell it privately.

My last car purchase took about 5 minutes on the phone haggling price with the internet sales manager. I bought the car sight unseen and only went in to the dealership to sign the papers and pick up the car.

In addition, you should have already found out what the best loan you can get before you go shopping. That way if you know you can get a 20,000 loan @ 5% with the monthly payment you want, all you care about is getting the lowest out the door sales price of the car.

Continuing on Mugs' example:

300$ monthly payment could mean:

1. low interest rate, low term
2. low interest rate, high term, extra expenses added to the car (IE, a couple thousand of dealer fees or other garbage
3. high interest rate, high term

In all cases except for #1, you lose big time. But you can't tell which you are getting by just the 300$ payment...

This is why I only deal with the internet sales managers now. Last car I bought I used edmunds to get bids from dealers, found the best one, made an appt with the internet sales guy, and ended up getting the car for $400 under what the edmunds TMV was. Plus with the promo financing he was able to get me a better interest rate than I had already gotten through my credit union (CU was 6%, I got 3.9% through the dealership).

It's very easy to understand your position: you're assuming perfect credit, and/or >$2000/mo income.
4-5 years of payments at my credit would end up $900 a month. But I got the dealer down to $22k, yay!

damn you are thick. continue getting fvcked over by the dealer. Its even worse with bac credit.

heh. you are the type dealerships LOVE to get.

Could someone please explain "holdback" ? I know it's an amount that the dealer gets on top of invoice price - how can you determine this for a car? Offering invoice still means they're making a profit, correct?

holdback is a kickback for getting the car off the lot faster. the dealer does not pay upfront for the cars. they get a small loan from the manufacter on them. If they sale them before 90 days they don't pay as much interest and get that back.

not 100 percent sure i got that right though heh.

That's what I'm used to, my last three cars were done over the phone. "I will pay you X for such and such car, do you want a sale today?" I'm trying to help the girl out.

oh, and get this. I asked to see the exact terms and I want to see the lease contract (she wants to lease and it's a good fit for her so don't bother). jackarse comes back YET AGAIN with "well your terms are X per month"

you farging idiot! I want to see your proposed widget contract!!!! Stop with the 'well your payment is X a month. We walked out of 3 dealerships today because they were so far off the mark.

Never again. I'll do it by phone like I always have.

I'm not sure how we can explain this better... It has nothing to do with how much you can afford. It has everything to do with KNOWING what factors determine that monthly payment you're after so you don't get screwed.

Wow, they can't fight eachother off with clubs to get to you.

"So, how much do you want to spend per month?"

I hear ya... The stealership that I went to today only offered me an $11,000 trade-in on my 2003 A4. That's a full $3,500 under the listed trade-in values in both the Edmund's and NADA guides.

Looks like I'll be selling that sucker myself :|

I personally love when they first question they always ask if what color you want. Because if I wrote a list of the most improtant things, color would definitely by 1st or 2nd

haha yeah have had that happen.

Everyone HATES having to buy a car... as consumers, why do we allow these jerks to continue selling their product this way?

I'd rather get kicked square in the nads then have to go buy a new car.

Look moron, it's real simple. I want 10,500 for my widget that I am selling to you. Do you accept or do you not?

I'm so glad you made a point of this.

Everytime I read a discussion about auto buying, people chime in with car buying tips and tricks and share the car salesmen "4-square" as if it was some well-kept secret they pilfered from the dealership lockbox.
It's real easy. You know what car configuration you want. 5 minutes on google will give you a fair value. BINGO.

I came in to test drive my car. Went home. Called them on the phone, if they didnt honor my final price they could take a hike.

Yup, just walk away, don't let them intimidate you.

That kinda makes sense if they're using one of those online configurators for a custom order. The color is the first thing the computer asks after the model.

I hate near anyone trying to sell a car. They are nearly always trying to screw you over. I asked a banker who was selling an Expedition if it had been in any accidents and he tells me no. Well, I copy the VIN and run a carfax report and it states "Major damage to front of vehicle from head-on collision." No damage.... bastard...
