I hate Best Buy

She was looking for a new laptop for around $600 to replace her four year old emachine PC. To get her the best bang for the buck I recommended the HP Pavilion dv6113us for $629 after MIR at CompUSA. Is has an AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 Processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 80GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive, 15.4-inch WXGA TFT Display, 8X DVD+/-RW Drive, with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I figured it was the best New Years Day bang for the buck out there.

HomeAppraisersWife tells me that her friend does not like HP, ok fine then to stay under $600 without dropping down to a Celeron or Sempron I say have a look at this Gateway MX6433 Notebook with Lexmark X1270 All-In-One Printer package at Best Buy for $550 out the door.

She goes to BB where some fast Eddie gets a hold of her and sells her this HP dv6108nr for $750 then adds the 3-Year Performance Service Plan for $179.99 and Anti-Virus. She walked out the door spending just under $1000!

That "fast eddie" was just doing his job, if you didn't want her to spend that much money, you should have gone along.

You should at least have her go back and have the "3-yr service plan" removed from the charge.

Best Buy will leave her high and dry if she ever tries to take advantage of that deal. I went through this with a family member. Best Buy sux.

Seriously, how can you put any blame on Best Buy? Like everyone else has said, your wife's friend is an idiot.

We were up to visit her on Saturday and I offered to look at her pc, probabally just needed a motherboard battery, but they did girl stuff all day. We drove home (220 miles away) on Sunday for new years so I tried to help the best i could from across the state.

I could just see what happened. She goes in and asks for the Gateway but fast Eddie steers her to the new slick styled HP with a built-in webcam. "You don't like HP, no problem we'll sell you a three year service plan in case you have any trouble. Oh and don't forget the Anti-virus (nevermind that it comes with one year of Norton)"

This reply is about as weak as your original rant.

I?d be pissed at that comment if I weren?t so envious of your nickname.

More rant: Dropping from an AMD Turion 64 X2 with 1GB of RAM to an Intel Core Solo with only 512MB for more money arug!

This reminds me of another thread on a different message board where a guys g/f went to buy a car and didn?t get the exact price she wanted or finance deal. The guy was pissed that the salesman screwed his g/f over and all this when it was infact his g/f's fault for not being assertive and walking away when she wasn?t getting the deal she wanted.

When you shop for things like that, cars/computers/homes you have to be a smart consumer or the salesmen will walk all over you. Remember they are there to make money, not give you the best deal.

Solution:
Go with her, return the damn thing and eat the restocking fee and buy what you wanted and don't get the service contract. This seems like the obvious solution and is both practical and simple.

Loss to you: an hour of time
Loss to her: $115 or so

We live 220 miles away. As my wife said "You tried. If she didn't get a good deal that's her fault for not listening."

But, I had to rant none the less.

HomeAppraiserswifw also adds "It's those type of purchasers that make up for you hagglers."

nite all

Simple law of nature, predator vs. prey. And Eddie got pretty cool commission out of that overpriced service plan.

In my experience, Best Buy and Circuit City salesmen don't receive commission. Just the fear of losing your job. 🙂

I looked for a hard drive online at BestBuy for kicks... I noticed in the online cart that they suggested that I pay them to install it... for $149.99.

Eddies at BB don't work on commission.

I believe they get "spiffs" if they sell over a certain number of extended warantees and service plans. The spiffs being free stuff and a higher % off purchases.
