I've cost my insurance company about $5k in auto damage, and my health insurance company about $800 in medical bills.

it's due to property values rising...my insurance goes down each year until I buy a new car.

In reply to airbags...they have saved me from injury, but I have seen others both (more) financially hurt (as in the airbags deployed and their nice car is now totalled) and physically hurt (as in a very pretty chick ran into a garage pole coasting in neutral and not paying attention, when the airbag blew it sent her 50 charm necklace into her throat and face.

The areas we need to improve currently are footwell intrusion & side impacts, I see more than a few fractured tib/fibs & the occasional femur.

I'd like to see better head restraint systems (Volvo type headrests) and side/head airbags mandatory now...

Isn't every car they make these days have air bags?

anyways

If you are complaining about paying high either way, why don't you pull out a stats on that?

1. price difference between car with airbag and without.

2. average price increase on insurance per increase dollar on car values

3. price difference in insurance between car with airbag and without,

4. Airbag repair costs in general

5. average number of accident per months per driver

Maybe you would like to make it your choice to smoke crack, after all it only hurts you.

Sure, why not. Personally, I don't use drugs, but if someone chooses to waste their life on it - go for it. If you're over the age of 21, and are not harming anyone else, do what you like.

Some people are thoroughly addicted to alcohol and cause quite a bit of public damage. Would you like to bring back prohibition?

But as long as there are idiots out there who aren't covered and will end up leeching off the gov't for their injuries, then I do support mandatory airbags.

Fix the source of the problem, mandatory auto insurance in every state (if it's not already). If you're behind the wheel of a car, you should be insured.

it's due to property values rising...my insurance goes down each year until I buy a new car.

It goes down each year because the value of your car is dropping!

I'd like to see better head restraint systems (Volvo type headrests) and side/head airbags mandatory now...

I'd like to see a choice.

Could part of the problem be the design of the airbags?

There have been no reports of similar problems in Australia, due to the different design of airbags. see here for details

In addition you have also focused on just deaths. What are the statistics with regard to head injuries?

this is hugely old news and in reality only affects two types of people:

1) infants in rear-facing car seats, which get smacked by the airbag. this is why nearly every car on the market has an airbag-cutoff switch.

2) midget women, who have to sit 2" from the steering wheel, can't see over the dashboard, and in the event of an accident without an airbag, would have to have the steering wheel surgically removed from their foreheads. these people shouldn't be driving anyway, and i'd still take my chances with a 200 MPH balloon than a 65 MPH steel ring.

unless you are sitting too close to the wheel, airbags are completely inflated BEFORE you touch them. haven't you watched the crash-test videos? it is only people who are too short to drive who get smacked by them as they inflate.

and yes, sometimes people get bruises or burns on their arms when the bag goes off. that's a small price to pay for still having a face.

if you're really such a dumbsh!t that you think airbags are a bad idea, just pull the fuse. duh. then we can all hope you remove yourself from the gene pool. sorry, but i've seen too many teenagers away from violent collisions in high school thanks to their airbags to listen to this kind of crap.

Not at all. Previous warnings were only for very young kids, not 14 year olds.

Apparently you failed to read any of the numerous articles posted in this thread.

Uh, duh, I do wear my seatbelt, man. And, like, dude - if I pull the fuse I've, like, already paid for the airbag and stuff.

yea, the little old lady hugging the steering wheel sydrome. scary stuff.

and yea the steering wheel is hard stuff.

older cars = dangerous. earlier cars had sharp or narrow center posts in their steering wheels to impale you in an accident to boot. car engineering design has learned from countless design mistakes and deaths throughout the decades.

I did. So what's your point?

If that was an issue, force the auto manufacturers to OFFER it as an option, don't force them to sell it as STANDARD.

I'm all for choices, but I'm NOT for other people making choices for you.

Seatbelts? Optional?
Airbags? Optional?
Shift interlock? Optional?
Side-guard door beams? Optional?
CHMSL? Optional?

Most importantly, Car? Optional?

unless you have the build of a 14 yo you are safer with an airbag installed.
Just don't let kids ride in the front
exactly.

now tell us why you hate airbags OP.

i was in an accident and had an airbag go off in my face. it was much better than eating the steering wheel or the dash.

I don't know up until what age the children are forbidden in front seats - especially considering that safety belts are not designed for children

I'll bet the number of miles driven has gone up from 1997-2004 as well.

If car mfgs had to make cars with and without all of these safety options, the price of cars would increase. It's cheaper to just make all of the cars with everything, than to make a custom car for each buyer.

2005 Jeep Liberty:

Put a kid in the pass seat, airbag turns off.
Put an adult in the pass seat, airbag turns on.
Put a couple boxes on the pass seat, airbag turns off.

Magic!

It's a mixed bag for me. My father is 80% blind ( a tire exploded in face due to defect ) and in my parent's 1999 F-150, you can manually disable the passenger side airbag, which his doctor STRONGLY recommended due to his facial condition, so we did.

My parents got in a head-on collision due a driver falling asleep and coming into their lane. My mother's airbag practically saved her life even though she broke her hip (got a replacement and she's walking again though) yet not having the airbag on my father practically saved his face from immense further damange.

Dunno what to think about 'em...

It's such a crock that they jsut say anyone under 14.... They shuld make statements based on the actual facts which is height and weight. There are some 14 year olds that are taller than their parents and some that look like they are 10. Two completely different situations.

If you have a smaller sized kid, have them sit in back (Duh). Not that hard to figure out. And some vehicles have a switch you can turn on/off the airbags specifically for that reason. But if you do that and you get in an accident, no whining because your face is smashed up and you can't walk any more...

My truck has the switch and it's 8 years old. Although it doesn't have a 2nd row of seats.

yeah.. my 3 has a weight sensor for the driver.. if under 80lbs, airbag is cut off. Altho, if you're under 80lbs and driving... you probably shouldn't be. I don't think there's anything for the passenger tho.. could be wrong, didn't read closely on that.
