Forgot to mention GR:AW, last good "old school" shooter with Ghost Recon in title.

Based on other suggestions posted and your feedback to them, you just have to play FEAR too, brilliant FPS for $2.50 on uplay.

Gears of War 1 for Windows is still a great single player campaign.

Bioshock series for sure.

Quake 4 is by far my favourite Quake game. It looks stunning.

UT99 is my all time favourite multiplayer game.

Unreal II is a fun game but there is a bit of thinking involved.

Judging by this thread, I am the only one to have ever tried Loadout, or it is just a terrible game and I didn't get the memo that we do not speak of it. I get lots of happy go lucky vibes from it, and it has given me tons of play time remniscent of UT for not taking it seriously.

Painkiller black a great game. Some jumping around to get Holy items and upgrades, but at heart an FPS. I played PK gold several years ago...came on 9? CD's.

Are there any GREAT shooters I am missing?

Did you play Unreal Tournament, arguably the greatest online multiplayer arena FPS of all time? You didn't mention it on your list. There's a new one under development that's going to be free!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh2T0aSp94w

The original Unreal Tournament (1999) had hundreds of thousands of players, over 10,000 user-made custom maps and mods, and numerous organized clan leagues and ladders.

You can download a pre-alpha of the new game here:

http://www.unrealtournament.com

Here's a link to a broadcast of a competitive 5 on 5 capture-the-flag map that was part of a UT99 tournament (Major League Unreal Tournament, or MLUT):

Not into mulitplayer so much. I do enjoy a decent story to follow...

This is a great thread, I'm making a list right now! OP doesn't mention half life but I assume he's played them all. If he has not, do that immediately.

TONS of great ideas here...thanks guy!

They should revamp some of the old games with better graphics!

Would love to see Unreal on the Crysis engine!

If you like story driven single player, I liked Bad Company 2 (a bit short, but very nice), and to go really REALLY old school, Shogo: Mobile Army Division. Also, I didn't see any mention of Prey in this thread, which I also really liked for single player (also story driven).

It would be lucky to have never played the original Half Life because now you can experience it with modern graphics.

How can you play half life with modern graphics?
Check Steam - it's been redone in the updated Source engine. It was redone in 2004 with the Source engine (Half Life Source) and has been done again this year in the latest Source engine (Black Mesa) which, although it's early access, is pretty much done.

there are still tens of thousands of players of UT99.

in fact I host my own UT99 server: {CBGB} test server

it's a Death Match server and its named after my old Clan.

I just got Call of Juarez off Steam for $3.47 - Western in the style of Borderland's graphics...GREAT buy for the money!

They made two more great Call of Juarez games, Bound in Blood and Gunslinger.

Skip The Cartel, though.

Call of Juarez I really enjoyed, but I tried the sequels and hated them. They tried to become Call of Duty and I preferred their original idea.

The only one that was slightly like CoD was The Cartel and, yes, it definitely suffered for it. BiB and Gunslinger were much better return-to-roots games.

I didn't like the one where you were in the Civil war at the beginning. I much preferred the original except that one guys voice was terrible, been years so I forgot the details but I just recall hating the sequels.
