Did I call it or what? F-tard was WRONG assuming I flashed it, but I hit the nail on the head about being a numbskull. Just what this forum needs more of, eh?

I assumed you had flashed it because this is a tech forum, and most people here are bright enough to maximize their investments in that fashion. The concern was not that you had flashed it (which I assumed) but that you didn't read the FAQ.

While it would be silly to presume you read the FAQ for a flash that you haven't used, it IS obvious that you have done no research whatsoever into the performance of your drive.

The stinkin' NEC is unacceptably noisy playing music CDs, but insanely loud playing a DVD. The POS DVD-ROM combo drive that came in this Pavilion is whisper quiet doing both. Why should that be? How much do I have to spend to get a DVD burner to do the same?

If the NEC produces noise while playing silver audio CD's ... as differentiated from "music" CD's (mp3) or while playing silver DVD-ROMthen quite simply, your drive is faulty.

The NEC with default firmware only plays SILVER DVD's at a slow rate of speed. If you have made DVDR "copies", it is going to play them noisily unless you use Nero Drivespeed as mentioned by another poster here.

Personally I'd suggest you just toss the NEC and buy another HP Pavillion, because it's obvious you would rather throw money away at something you don't know about and then bitch about it, rather than trying to actually determine what the problem is.

...it IS obvious that you have done no research whatsoever into the performance of your drive.

WTF do I have to "research" the performance of my drive? It had umpteen five star reviews, and was priced right. WTF should it be noisy under any circumstance? I don't need or want to burn anything at higher rates. No concern to me what-so-ever. I'll trade speed for quiet any day, but reliability is a must either way.

Now, I have zero respect for any reviews by "people here are bright enough to maximize their investments", because they couldn't care less about the noise generated by their overclocked CPU fans, or "high performance" optical drives. To say that thing is quiet, is either an outright lie, or they're deaf!

If you will just read what I have already posted twice dude.

It is NOT a noisy drive when reading silver media. If you get noise while reading silver media, you have a BAD SAMPLE.

(If you had come here or researched when you first had this problem, you could have exchanged it under warranty.)

If the problem only occurs on burned media, you can fix it with this

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

That works perfectly. I now have a second drive, usable for more than burning stuff!

I use Nero Recode. I have DVD Shrink installed, but never used it. Recode has the option to do an entire dvd, main movie only or remake a dvd by selecting the titles. When choosing the entire DVD, you can choose to "blank" out sections you don't want (which I swear DVD Shrink could too). It replaces the original with a placeholder of a colored screen, still image or slide show of the removed video. Unfortunately, all of these options take space (granted, a lot less than the original). This is annoying because some DVDs have annoying video that play in the beginning. If I blank these out, I'm left with a minute of blank colored screen. I have to use other programs (like pgcedit) to skip this section entirely. VOB Blanker and PGCEdit have blanking options as well that might work better than Nero, but these programs are not entirely user friendly.

Nero VisionExpress can make basic menus, but I didn't like how it functioned. I've been trying to get DVD Maestro, which used to be $5000 software, but it isn't made, sold or distributed anymore. My current goal is to try to consolidate a two-dvd set by clipping out extras that I don't want.

Let ME guess. You're just one more of the many numbnuts infesting this forum as of late?
I'm sorry you have sand in your vagina. If you douched, it might help the itching AND the smell. Don't do it too often though, or you might get a yeast infection.
The drive is stupidly noisy, even when playing a simple music CD. No firmware has been touched... EVER!

If your drive is noisy while playing a burned DVD video, it is functioning correctly. If your drive is noisy while playing an audio CD, it is defective.

franguinho told a female member that she sounds like she has sand in her vagina and was given a month off. While Ornery isn't a female, I don't see why there should be a double standard.

Mine's using 1.04 and will stay that way. It's quiet now, thanks to DriveSpeed, which I am VERY grateful for!

I linked it, but Actaeon actually posted the info back before I got ugly :)

Also, I don't know what you are using it for, but the new firmware supports error-checking through Nero DVD Speed (also available from cdspeed2000.com) Getting that nitpicky about quality can end up just being a waste of time, but if you have problems with coasters you may want to consider looking into it.

I certainly appreciate the help. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD+R and have yet to see a coaster... knock wood. I'm just thrilled the damn thing is quiet now, which was my only issue with the drive. My son has a "Micro Advantage" with the same noise issue. I have no doubt it will also be cured using DriveSpeed. Thanks again!
