Well people dont call the cops because it means insurance goes up AND the damages, instead of the damages. They need to save money...

Somone rear ended my dad a little while ago and it looked like the bumper had a small dent and very slighly offset trunk.
Totaled the other car to nothing though, and cost them 9 grand for the very slight damages.

getting rear-ended at a stop sign has got to be the dumbest thing in the world! did that guy think you weren't going to stop? i swear some people shouldn't be allowed to drive.

Actually, when I was just talking to him he complained that I stayed too long at the stop and that he expected me to move out of the way. Ugh... I can feel for him losing his job, but I'm not cutting him any favors to his boss tomorrow.

I just got back from the body shop.
Estimated damages are at $1490.43 CDN (!!) or $980.56 US.

The car is worth nowhere near that, so I dunno if he will pay. I might let him slide for say $800 CDN or so, I paid $600 for the car so that would cover the car and registration. If he doesn't want to pay that though then I will be filing a claim right away.

You only payed $600 for your car? WTF? lol. Must be one hell of a crappy car.

like you should be talking

My car was $3,000 thank you very much. More than 3x the price of his. Also we got it under bluebook which was somewhere around $5,000 so screw off.

Just because the cops write up a report doesn't mean your insurance knows about it...

I like the idea of them being there so there is at least a record of the incident, with a drawing and all that good stuff, plus road conditions and and other variables documented

if you talk it over with the other party and neither of you decide to contact insurance, it's all good... the police report is there in case the other party tries to deny the accident all together

In Canada or at least nova scotia you're legally obliged to call the police if the accident caused more than $500 in damage (based on your guess). Of course even if it's $100 I'm sure you can call them and they won't complain.

I'd always call the cops, or at least in your case use a camera to take pictures if you had one.

based on my guess it was $200.. 😱

I completed the joint accident report with the company and the driver. For all of you saying to call the police, turns out that you were wrong. I went to the police station and they didn't even want to look at the joint report. They say that that's all you need to fill out and that the police don't deal with accidents, unless of course someone got injured.

So now I'm going to mail this to the insurance company and hopefully I'm gonna get something out of this because I'm deprived of a vehicle now. They're sending an appraiser out monday or tuesday, however my coverage is one-way only so I don't know if I will be covered or not even though the other guy is 100% at fault.

$500? I don't know if any accident anymore would be less than $500.

just tried to start the car to go to the corner store and it won't even start. It really is dead... lol.

I just checked my insurance policy and it says that I'm covered for any damages resulting from accidents where I am not at fault, even if I only have one way coverage (ie: no collision coverage). Pretty sweet... so at least I'll get some sort of compensation out of this.
