It wouldn't make sense for a Marine to flip out on a bunch of peaceniks yelling insults. Guess what that would do. It would make the Marine look like a bloodthirsty jerk instead of a reserved, dignified servant of his country. It is possible for some people to take the high road now and again. Obviously the civil peace protestors know not of this proverbial path.

Jason

Also, I don't think I've seen any 15 peace protestors that I would put money on over a single Marine.

It is sad that this war is about to be as unpopular as the Viet Nam war, allowing protesters exercising their "rights" to malign the very people that provide them that "right". This incedent is a deje vu of 1970 for me, when a like incedent occured to me. It is asinine to think that a single marine is going to stand up to these punks. First off, protestors are only strong if they travel in paks like wild jackels. When you are accousted by wankers like this, your jaw drops in disbelief, and then it takes a few moments to decide how you are going to react. By that time the issue is over and you are stunned. You walk off shaking your head in dismay, that you,in all your pride and glory, have been misunderstood by the very people you love and are willing to die for. It is not humiliating, but it sure makes you wonder why, why am I doing this and who am I doing it for?

Marine, you know what you are doing it for. You know you are America's choosen hero. We all proudly proclaim our pride for your efforts to sustain the very freedom we, and other nations build their foundations upon. You will reign victorious over our enemies. You will carry the banner of freedom and liberty high and proud. Your God has set you apart to do a mighty and important task, and He will be with you always. Go and know in your soul, that in spite of adversity from un educted protestors, you will carry the day, and those who have harmed you in ther name of patriotism will be burdened to the grave with the injustice they brought upon you. The memory of what they did will be shame upon them until the day of Judgement. They will then answer for their deeds.

God speed, young soldier, bring us the victory we know you can, to those of us who proudly salute you.

I respect all members of our armed forces, and congratulate you, ThaGrandCow, on your self-restraint in the face of stupid jerks.

Next time, tell them to paint a target on their foreheads, and then go join their brethren human shields in Iraq. The gene pool needs cleaning up.

I respect you. Makes me wish you could put some of that training to use and (insert violent comment here). Yea, that'd teach 'em!

Armed force personnel should be issued a live grenade and used at their discretion. If I was in his shoes I'd arm that thing, drop it and run as fast and as far as I can :)

First of all, they have no right to do what they did to you. Second of all... defending our freedom?? WTF?? From who?

From people like you :|

Wtf? How are they defending freedom from people like me?

Anyway, I should say that when I see the whole "defending freedom" thing, I assume the person is talking about fighting Iraq or some other country that has nothing to do with our freedom. I realized right after I posted that the existence of the military protects us.
If I saw someone spitting on a soldier in order to protest a war, I would be liable to hit someone, that someone being the protestor. I respect people who protest for what they believe in, but I can't respect stupidy and blind hatred displayed by so many protestors of this war.

i don't support the war, but those people were jerks. it's not like you have anything to do with the choice to go to war, and simply being a member of the military doesn't even mean you automatically think it's right. you may very well think it's right, but the point is they were being dumbasses and unfairly using you as a way to get their aggression out. which is pretty ironic considering they want "peace." sorry that happened to you.

There were some protesters that I walked up on this weekend and they asked if I was in the military once they saw my haircut. I told them that I was in fact a US Marine and they proceded to curse at me, try to start a fight, and spit at me. I was completely taken back. I mean here I am, about to go to war to protect the liberties and freedoms that even give these people the right to protest in the first place, and they are acting like they hate me and everything I worked for.
The standard line parroted by leftist apologists is that harassment and abuse of servicemen by 'anti-war' protestors was a rarity during the Vietnam era, and that most of the protests instead focused on opposing the war itself while supporting our servicemen.

Of course, that is a lie, one need not look any further than the leftist icon of that era, Hanoi Jane and her despicable 'Aren't you sorry for bombing babies?' ambushing of our servicemen who, as prisoners of war, were enduring some of the most barbaric treatment possible while their enemy counterparts were in fact enjoying the "humane and lenient" treatment in US custody as prisoners of war.

Ask any Vietnam veteran who returned to the United States how 'supportive' US-hating protestors were. Imagine that you have endured months of inclement conditions in a hostile foreign region, the hope of going home often being the only thing keeping you from blowing your own brains out, and your homecoming is being spat-on and verbally attacked by a sniveling hippie who wouldn't risk ruining his hair-do to protect you or the way of life he enthusiastically enjoys.

Welcome home, soldier.

This is copied from a Vietnam related website:
"Bonds of Brotherhood in combat never die and we were never so alive as we were with the men we faced death together with in Vietnam. When I meet other Vietnam Veterans I immediately feel a Bond, a Brotherhood that only we who had been there can understand. My life would be missing a part if I did not have this comradership with my fellow Veterans. Non Vets say "it's been thrity years, forget about it." I am here to tell you that you can not forget the defining episode in your life that sets you apart from others. How can you forget something as life changing an experience as the War in Vietnam?

Upon returning from Vietnam, to the United States, I have bad memories of how Vietnam Vets were treated by the cowardly and shameful media and protestors. Men who bore arms and did so with honor, came home to be brushed aside while less courageous, less honorable men rose to represent an era."
So now you know this is part of the soldier's burden, indeed it strikes to the crux of the 'double-edged' sword that is a free country, where dissent is allowed, no matter how misguided, ignorant, or stupid.

But that merely means the government must 'tolerate' dissent, it doesn't prevent me from punching one of these pampered and snively US haters square in the mouth if I personally witness them verbally insulting one of our servicemen. :disgust:

However, you are a United States Marine, and therefore are obligated to remain professional and composed in the face of such overwhelming temptation. That's ok, I'm not! :D

I mean, after all the training I went through in the last 8 months to become what I am I get out and see that people are basically ready to slap me in the face. Thanks protesters, glad to know that you're grateful for all of the things we go through to keep you safe.

they were idiots. While many people are against this upcoming war, and rightfully so, the leaders are the ones that should be blamed, not the military. Our military does nothing more than do their duty, and their duty is to do whatever our leaders tell them to do, for better, or for worse.

Actually I'm really not. I'm stationed right now in Camp Lejune, North Carolina finishing up my training as a combat engineer. We were told that other bases had protesters outside but I didn't think that they'd show up here. Our CO recieved an email right before we were sent out on our weekend liberty that there were some possible protests outside the base in Jacksonville and we should be on the lookout for them. Well unfortunately I found them and they felt like trying to start some trouble. :(

Our country has declined to a very sad state, and I am ashamed that these people treated you in such a manner. Thank you for all that you are doing, and please tell your fellow soldiers that I am proud of what you do.

What I meant by slap in the face wasn't literal, only figuratively. But that's what it felt like when I was standing there for that few minutes, I didn't even know what to say. I stayed there for a bit after I was able to speak again and tried to speak civilly to the protesters but they were very emotionally charged and didn't even want to discuss events that were happening. Granted, if someone had actually thrown a punch at me I would have had to defend myself, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let them pull me down to their level and get me to start the fight. I ended up gritting my teeth and just walking away. Fortunately, there was no fight and in the end noone was hurt (physically)

You answerd my skeptism when you addressed RD's post. I just still can't believe thier are people out there like that. If they disagree fine but you're certainly not the one to tell about it, you're just doing your duty. Also they should know even if you wanted to retort you can't or your carrer could be finished. Anyway I wish I'd seen it, I'm a civilain and have no problem leveling someone whos mouth is too big.

I want to say thank you as well. I try to make it known that I support the men and women that server our country. I'm sorry they treated you like $hit.

I hope you will be safe in combat (if it comes).

Well as much as they're telling me right now, my reserve station has been activated and when I get home next Friday I'll have the weekend to get my stuff in order. Monday after that I'll be joining the rest of the 4th Marine Division in New Orleans, more then likely shipping off to the mid-east within a few weeks. They won't commit to anything yet, since my orders have already changed 4 times in the last few months, but this close to graduation I can't see them really changing them again.
