I got a lipid panel (Cholesterol check)

dxkj

Lifer
6'2 - 220lbs 18% BF

Since I had never gotten a Cholesterol check, I thought, what the hey.

HDL 24 (Aim for >35)
CHOL 145 (Aim for <200)
TRIG 217 (Aim for <200)
LDL 78 (aim for <130)

TRIG level is to be expected... but my HDL is lower than I would like 🙁 I never workout, and I eat frozen pizzas, sausage, eggs, fast food, fried stuff for most of my diet 🙂

So I'm not dying like I should be!!

You're happy with those numbers?

"It is believed that the triglycerides/HDL ratio is one of the most potent predictors of heart disease. It is generally considered that if this number is below 2 the person is generally at a low risk of heart disease. So, the lower your triglycerides, or the higher your HDL, the smaller this ratio becomes. (You have a triglyceride/HDL ratio of 9!!!)

Dude, start taking care of yourself - you're headed towards heart attack city.

Cut the refined carbs and start excercising.

Mine on 11/19 was:

Total: 176 (normal)
Triglycerides: 119 (normal)
HDL (good): 43 (a little low?)
LDL (bad): 109 (normal)

lol you made 3 posts saying the same thing, thanks 🙂

I have low LDL, and low TC, and barely high Tri's and my HDL is LOW 🙁 it could be worse

True. But, not all of us live in an ideal world.

rip- you said the same thing like 3 times in a row

my LDL is low
my TC is low
my HDL is low (need to work on that), and triglycerides are a tad high. (200 recommendeD)

yes I have a little work to do but Im not about to die as you seem to think.

What do you plan on doing to improve your numbers?

3x because I was bumping. I was just suprised by the apparent lack of knowledge about lipid profile results and was looking to get some reaction.

I would suggest testing for lipoprotein(a), homocysteine, and CRP too if you're really serious about it.

No, you're not about to imminently die, but I know people that have had heart attacks in their 30s. May or may not happen to you, but your results should be a wake up call for you. High triglycerides (should be below <100) and low HDL (should be >50) are a leading indicator of heart disease.

Your health is your own business. Just giving you a heads up.

By the way, some doctors say that HDL/triglycerides should be >1.

In addition to cutting refined carbs out of your diet and excercising, take fish oil and vitamin C too. If your homocystine is high, take folic acid and B6 and B12.

This is assuming you're serious about your health. Why else would you get a lipid profile done in the first place?

gotcha, thanks for the bumps...

Hrm, where did you get the info for Trig/HDL? Before you mentioned that all I had heard was the LDL/HDL was the most important measurement.

About cutting refined carbs out of my diet... do you mean white rice, sugar, etc?

I plan on changing my diet and exercising.

I'm also thining my Triglycerides were high for that day because I had 5 beers 13hrs before the test. It was our normal game night for me and my buddies, and I wasnt told that would affect anything until I read the sheet attached to the tests..

Triglycerides are very sensitive to what you eat before the test. If you fasted for about 12 hrs before the test (water only), you should have been okay.

I'll PM you later.

By the way, I'm not not trying to be a prick. I wish someone has given me a stern lecture and pointed me in the right direction when I was in my early 20s.

I got my lipid profile under control (without drugs), but I was 43 when I did my own research and figured out how to do it.

Don't be stupid like me and do something about it now while your young. Your quality off life will likely be a lot better when you age.

HDL 48
CHOL 172
TRIG 130
LDL 98

Trig/HDL = 2.7
TC/HDL = 3.6
LDL/HDL =2.0

Those are my wife's reading 🙂 a little better than mine eh
