I give up... my simple phone died.

I have never had a smart phone, I always got the "free" upgrades through verizon and have the ancient technology flip phone. Well 3 months ago one of my hinge joint broke and just last night the flip top separated from the body and thus the phone no longer works.

Luckily, I have been up for renewal 3 weeks now, and already cased the phone selection at the store. I am ready to take the leap into the second decade of the 21st century and purchase some type of Android based phone. I have massive hands and I would really prefer some type of physical keyboard. This looks to limit me to the Droid. Is this my only option, is it the correct choice?

I reviewed my last 6 months of usage and I have never approached my 450 minutes, my 250 texts, and of course I never used internet on my POS phone. As such I figure I should get a start data plan as I just don't use my phone.

I do get 20% off the plan through my company, but this seems to only be 20% off the base plan and not any additional features... I plan to figure this out at the store and find out how to maximize the plan discount over the add on feature plans.

cliffs... Verizon + big hands = Droid?

Droid 2 is the phone to get on Verizon is you want a physical keyboard. My employee discount works on minutes, text, and data plans with Verizon. The Verizon rep told me the only thing it wouldn't work on is an unlimited minutes plan, but the data portion would still be discounted.

Use one first. If you have enormous hands, a tiny smartphone keyboard might not work too well. You might actually find an on-screen keyboard to be better.

Okay, I will stop in to the store on my way home and try out some models. Are basically all Androids the same, are there some to stay away from?

There's definitely no shortage of sub par Android phones. On Verizon today, the only Android phones you should consider buying are the Droid 2, Droid X, and Droid Incredible.

Stay away from Samsung. I own an Epic, and it is sick, but I had to void the warranty to get it this way. Samsung doesn't have very good radios, so if you do find yourself using GPS or anything, you will be disappointed. I know it looks pretty, but stay away.

The Motorola phones are pretty sweet. My gf has the Droid X. It doesn't have the keyboard, but if the one with the keyboard is as efficient as this one without, you should be happy with the quality.

have you considered switching carriers? i know for a fact tmobile has great service around allentown/philadelphia

if you're sticking with verizon then, as others have said, droid 2 or droid x. personall I'd skip the droid incredible as it is almost a year old and the battery life can be an issue.

Do you have any older phones laying around you could activate for awhile? Then you could always hold out for one of the newer phones this summer. I know there's always something better but since they are actually making the jump to dual-core phones/LTE it might be worth it.

Otherwise on VZW right now? Check out the Droid X versus Droid 2, and maybe the Incredible, though the battery life on it isn't supposed to be too good. Also the Droid 2 Global is supposed to run hot and have short lifetime as well apparently.

Thanks everyone, I ended up getting a Droid 2. I tried using the screen keyboards and even sideways, my big fingers couldn't type worth a damn. The old phone still powered on and the guy was able to pull my contacts so that was nifty. He was also nice enough to set my phone to vibrate only (all I ever use).
