I really wanted to give it a chance, I basically did an upgrade from Windows 7 to windows 8. It worked with no issue.

All my apps worked (ie: Lightroom,office etc..) all good

The Metro interface is the killer, it has some neat features but it is a bear to work with and wears you down over time in terms of usability.

Trying to shoehorn a touch interface on a 24inch 1920x1200 screen with mouse just does not translate.

I would have to say Windows 8 will be a disaster in the corporate world, and it will be disliked by users in general when you need to do the equivalent of gestures with a mouse to do simple things. The multiple steps to put your PC to sleep, find apps etc..
 
Umm cool? Business are most likely going to skip windows 8 and either stick with, or upgrade to windows 7. Many of them are still running XP

it needs to have a separate touch and M&K mode or atleast customizable so it works better with one or the other.

Biggest gripe about Win8 is the lack of power user settings. one size does not fit all and what makes windows so much fun is customizing it.
 
Its going to be a very interesting launch->christmas season. I wonder how quickly SP1 (oh no, they'll call it "Experience Enhancement pack 1") will come out.

Anyone know when Win7 SP2 will be out?

Only microsoft could manage to come up with a simple looking UI and have it actually consume more cpu cycles than all previous UI combined.

I find it hard to believe that there will not be a way to completely and totally remove the metro if someone really wants to...
 
I looked at a magazine yesterday titled 'the complete guide to windows 8' . Inside the mag there is an article on reasons why you should switch, all they could come up with is how metro is great for touchscreens. There was another article on problems with windows 8 and generally it was about how everything everyone is saying about the desktop problems was making windows 8 a horrible experience.

MS screwed up big time with windows 8 and they should have made it two entirely separate products, windows for tablets and windows for desktops. Whoever came up with the idea of metro for desktops needs to be demoted.

Ohhhhhh man sooooo true! It's about time someone said it, and documented the string of failures that Ballmer has presided over. I've said it myself a million times, there's just a culture of total lameness at Microsoft that has to go. Much of it I'd wager can be traced back directly to Ballmer. He (and his direction for the company) suffers from that awful mix of hopeless wanna-be hipness (read: ULTRA lameness) combined with lack of vision for what actually does work. It's a terrible combination, hence things like the Kin and Metro and trying to use cheap parlor trick 'challenges' to sell WP7.

I so wish Ballmer would step down and take his hand-picked team of hacks with him, and get MS back on track with some real forward-thinking leadership. I won't hold my breath.
 
There are 94 "demo" apps in the store. That's like reviewing the iPhone with the first 100 apps published to the app store in 2008.
 
I think we should wait for the RTM before we make sweeping judgements. Just because something holds true today doesn't mean it won't be changed tomorrow.

Beta software should not be used as a QC for the final product because by definition you are using an unfinished product that often differs from the final product in many small ways.

Very true. The metro interface vaguely reminds me of the QuickStart function on the Lenovo netbook I used to have -- no background and only the most relevant apps... except that netbook would totally crap under Windows 8
 
It makes me wonder if there are 2 teams taking turns creating next version of Windows:

win95/98 - me - xp - vista - win7 - win8 - win9

See the pattern? Surely next version to upgrade is win9. However, win7 works so well I don't plan to upgrade anytime soon. Extended support now in 2020.
 
Well, the Release Candidate or whatever the new jazz word for it is coming in June...so we will know then if it is a total dog or not.

I wouldn't be surprised if the RC lets you disable the Metro, since there' no way in hell most companies are going to want that metro shit splashed all over their users' workstations like some deranged child took to the screen with a crayon. No one has even been able to answer how this metro is more efficient than just pinning your apps to the taskbar like in Windows 7.

Very true! Maybe they're more willing to take chances with operating systems when they've got something popular and stable on the market already.
 
The main guy working on win 8 is poised to be the next CEO of Microsoft.
I want to use RC before I decide whether win 8 is a failure or not
