I forgot how horribly boring cardio can be

Since I started martial arts last November, I've lost 15-20lbs. I kind of plateaued recently at 195lbs to 200lbs so I figured I'd start making use of my office's gym two weeks ago to see if I can get another 15lbs or so off.

I'm trying to mix things up by doing cardio two days a week, weights two days a week, and plyometrics one day a week along with martial arts two nights a week but dang cardio is boring. Just going along on the treadmill or elliptical machine and watching Sportscenter. La-de-da-de-da

Maybe I need to mix it up some more and go outside and run on the nice days. Wish there was a park near my house where I could just go play basketball for an hour but basketball courts in parks are mostly out of favor in the Atlanta 'burbs...

/mild rant

Yeah, but the YMCA membership is much too expensive.

I run outside. treadmill is boring. I still wish I lived in Boston, then I would just run along the charles. Now I live in Natick and I am actually getting in shape and the Charles is not that hard anymore.

I listen to audiobooks on my long runs in the gym especially. When I'm running outside, I just choose pretty routes and listen to music and let my mind wonder.

I like my cardio (cycling and running). I just listen to music when running. IMHO lifting weights is boring as hell

lots of time to think to yourself and clear your head though

Yeah, but I hate talking to myself. The conversation tends to be one-sided.

Aren't you around the Alpharetta area? You know of the Greenway? It's a lot more exciting than just running on a treadmill or on some boring track. Just a thought.

Before I joined the YMCA, I thought it'd be cheap. The monthly fee went up to $88 this year. I'm canceling. 😛

My cardio (aside from brisk walks around the city in between/after classes) is stationary bike.
Not terribly exciting, don't get the fresh air/sights, but it isn't boring if you do it while watching your favorite TV shows.
I watch Heroes, Naruto, Bleach (not lately, though), Chuck, plus other shows and time goes by quickly.

Yeah, my wife and I looked into getting a family membership and our jaws dropped at the price. We just do the program membership so that the kids can take swimming lessons there and play in their basketball league.

Music helps quite a bit if you don't really have anything on your mind. Another thing that helps with jogging is play ?pretend? where you pretty much get some good music going and imagine you are doing something other than just jogging. For example, I play paintball so when I start to burn out towards the end of my jog I imagine I'm on the field and I have the flag in my hand, there is X amount of time left in the game, being chased by the other team with paint flying past my head while running towards the my teams base for the winning point.

It sounds silly and it probably is, but never the less, it does help me push through the fatigue and hit my goal.

We pay $70/month for the largest YMCA in the world, it is about 9 miles from our house. There is also a Y Express about .5 miles that is included in our membership. The express has a variety of cario machines, weight machines, and free weights for quick workouts. The best thing is that both locations have free babysitting.

Try using some drugs, you'll get some new opinions in that conversation.

music, podcasts, audiobooks...I would die if forced to do cardio without these things

I forgot my MP3 player one time when doing cardio. Awful. I just sprinted for 5 minutes and said fuck it.

That's a God-awful attitude to have. Stick it out. Think of it as a test of will. Sometimes, as you listen to music and such, you don't listen to the rhythms of your body. Every once in a while it's good to get in touch with that so you know where you're at and how you're progressing. Sports psychologist often suggest it.
