I am pretty sure you would have to drink his blood to be susceptible. Methinks your friend is an idiot.

You could drink ALL an HIV+ person's blood and not get infected. UNLESS you a bleeding ulcer or bad gum disease.

HIV cannot survive stomach acid.

but it can servive in ur mouth

He said he cut his hand and needs a bandage, I didn't really look too closely at the cut and I told him where to go. Afterwards my friends told me that guy had AID's (they said a normal person wouldn't bleed like that and the blood was a strange color) and said hopefully you weren't taking deep breaths near him b/c the spores will get into your lungs. I feel so naive for not knowing how susceptable anyone can be to AIDS. I always thought it was only transmitted through direct contact through blood or sex. Fortunately, it was about 30 degrees last night and my friends said there is a very rare chance the spores could survive in that weather. Does anyone know the real chances of me getting AID's in a situation like that (assuming its a warm day)?

You were right to be cautious, as you can indeed catch AIDS merely by being within a 50-mile radius of someone who has AIDS, HIV, or a mild cold.

You should immediately incinerate yourself and your friend, as well as your respective immediate families to avoid any further contamination of your city.

Exactly. Look up how HIV is transmitted. You could bath in his blood and not catch it. Not that I recommend it or would do it.

so much paranoia going on...rightly so i guess, but what is bad is the horrible misinformation that is spread every day. I hear people telling stories like this all the time, about how they "almost" got aids from sharing a soda/stepping on a dried blood droplet etc etc

I guess what entertains me about this story is you and your friend saw a bum (who you obviously were afraid of) and you trust your friend's half-second, visual diagnosis of the color of a strangers blood to determine whether or not that person is HIV positive.

Breathing in spores? Color of blood?

is your friend in medical school or have any kind of training/backround on the subject of HIV/medical science?

No?

actually it is probably better that he didnt. who was it highlighted on the daily show (someone similar/below the surgeon general) that said that he believed HIV can be transmitted through tears or sweat.

Cliffs: You are an idiot. Go fcking volunteer somewhere and educate yourself instead of listening to 50 cent and your stupid friends.

my recomendation for the OP: read any "health" or "biology" book aimed towards 6th or 7th graders. Those "book" thinks will learn you plenty.

Well nobody really know nor fully understand the disease so we can't be absolutely certain that it can't be transmitted via air. In many countries, they say that you will get AIDS if you simply have sex with someone other than your SO and that it's God's punishment for adultry. In western countries, things are a bit more 'scientific' but there are many things science cannot explain. AIDS may be one of them.
