The recent plane landing in the Hudson made me think of this. People were talking about how noble the passengers were for letting the women go first. This doesn't make sense to me. Maybe back when the Titanic sunk women had a right to go first, they tended to be much weaker strength wise and would have a much more difficult time surviving than a man.
But in modern times I would say an average man thrown into the water to die vs. an average female getting thrown in would last the same amount of time. I think along with all the rights woman have gained (voting, employment etc.) they should also have to give up perks like this.
I think instead we should just give priority to children and the elderly, both of which are significantly weaker and stand a much greater chance of dying for that reason.
