I agree 100% with the OP. Go to Youtube, search for your favourite song, then try to find a Studio version amongst the millions of asstastic Live versions. It's a PITA.

I far prefer Studio over Live(except in Concert anyway).

Live versions are only better IF YOU'RE THERE SEEING IT LIVE. Otherwise it's just the song with worse sound quality.

That's definitely not the case for a lot of people. Most official live albums are professionally recorded and the crowd noise in no way upsets me. That's how I know others are enjoying the vibes right along with me! I found the set list QOTSA used when they played the First Ave here in Minneapolis and have it setup as a playlist in iTunes. I listen to it all the time.

You like Metallica, don't you Arcadio?

What isn't to like about this performance?

Sure, it's not the studio track.. But you can feel the energy that was present at the concert. Of course, it's not comparable to actually being there.. but it's as close as you're going to get.

I like to hear soundboard recordings, warts and all. It lets you hear who can play and who can't. Sometimes it lets you pick out instrumental parts that got lost in the studio mix. Some actual witty banter with the crowd is great -- I love that stuff. Bands that can't say just a few things to their fans between songs at a live show SUCK.

Commercially released live albums aren't always totally authentic. Some of them are "live" in varying degrees. They may cull the best performance of a song from several different nights, or outright re-dub certain parts.

For the most part, the only live/bootlegs I really go out of my way to collect are from obscure artists who I really like with essentially no commercial presence -- no videos, no talk show appearances, no TV, don't tour nationally. You take what you can get.

The performance is excellent but only if you watch it live or maybe on video. Live performances are meant to be watched live, or recorded on video so you can watch them later. But if it's just the song, then I'd rather listen to the original studio recording.

Not true at all.

Good examples that come to mind or the live albums of Nivrana Unplugged and Seethers "One cold night" which is just basically a live/unplugged album.

Both have a different take on the songs so that they fit the setting of the live/unplugged experience that gives everything a different vibe, in a good way IMO.

John Mayer, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Clapton, all also have live albums that, to me at least, are just as good but for different reasons as a their studio work, if not better.

Eh, I suppose not having the video would take something away.. but I used to play along to the audio live version all the time. It rocks.

Californication live @ Slane

Better than the album version x INFINITY. Studio version is practically unlistenable after hearing that song live.

Back when Frusciante played it those solos NEVER sounded the same from one show to the next

I see what we're doing here. This is like that "Most overrated bands" thread where everybody pushes thier opinions on everyone else.

there's nothing better than watching a live show. nothing. to be there in the momentis what seeing a live show is all about. they make cd's and records to get the music out there quicker, but to really appreciate and joy the music a musician has created tops the over produced crap on a cd.
