Idiots and racists?

You know, I didnt even think of it as being a racist comment. I thought of it more as a couple of inner city punks who were up to no good, trying to pick on a out-of-place "white" guy in a predominantly black mall. The thing is, if these two guys were kids, fine, kids and teenagers might not know better. But my friend was telling me that these guys looked like they were in their late 20's. These were adults.

My college internship was about a mile down the street from the mall this took place at. I haven't been to that mall in probably four or five years. Not a good area!

You aren't implying that their actions weren't racially motivated, right?

actually, my friend waited in line to get an Xbox360 at launch at the best buy right near security mall. he said he parked his car in the parking garage that is right next to that mall.

around 4am someone torched a car in that parking lot and it exploded. he was worried because it was on the same parking floor as his car was parked. luckily his car wasn't damaged at all.

My sister taught at a ghetto black high school. She left because of the harassment she took. When she told students they had to do work, and then disciplined those who weren't doing work in class, they rebutted with "we don't have to do what that white woman tells us". They would swear at her all the time under their breath (she could hear them) and see her as the "enemy" because she was the white oppressor. She got out of teaching altogether and I couldn't be happier for her -- why bother. I don't blame the kids, but I do blame their ghetto parents.

For ghetto people, being white alone is enough reason to dislike you. If you're a white male and wearing a suit? Thats double hate points right there. You're part of the machinery keeping 'em down.

Right. And what they said was inherently racist as well, right? It would surely seem so.

"Then my co-worker tells me that he hears one of them say "look, the white guy is scared to walk into the black mall without his black friend."

It's tough to say. You could assume the actions were racially motivated based on the content of the speech, but such an assumption might be faulty; it's possible that they would have acted in a similar manner to any individual dressed in a suit waiting for his friend at the door to the mall.

Just depends on if they were a$$holes in general, or racist a$$holes specifically. (Edit: I should point out that based on the statement, I would be inclined to assume the latter; however, as always, assumptions can be dangerous, which is why I made this rather long-winded post).

I wish I knew some quick fix to help people like that. If it were possible, though, somebody smarter or older than me would have already come up with it.

Well thats just it. They didn't say "that guy dressed in a fancy suit is afraid to be here." they apparently explicitly stated black and white, only.

It certainly sounds like it was. However, I have seen my share of white/hispanic people doing the very same thing.

I'd be inclined to go with the latter as well. Its no different than a black guy out in the country being intimidated by some rednecks, its just not PC to call a black person racist.

And they would be racist as well. I am not trying to single a certain group of people out. It just seems hypocritical of society in general if we can't say that these guys were acting in a racist manner.

Not to bring up the imus thing, but seriously.

Nappy head ho's = OMG RACIST!

"look, the white guy is scared to walk into the black mall without his black friend." = well, they were just assholes.

Class envy

If you were wearing a basketball jersey and those huge capri pants (or are they just really long shorts? ) I see a lot of people wearing these days, they probably wouldn't have said anything.

That?s a cute story. I was trying to see if I had any good white mall stories, but any time I walk into an upper class mall people just ask me where stuff is or do you have this in a medium. You know just that same ole racist, "he's a minority so he must work here" stuff. Well except for the security, they know better. I come in and their ears perk up and they start sniffing about, "Yeah, Jeb we got us a chicken thief in footlocker." Well you get the point.

Here have a cookie, for realizing that racism is bad.

I thought nothing of it; i glanced at them and then stopped and waited for my co-worker.

That is what made them stare you down. Whether it was intentional or not, it looked to them like you held back when you saw them. I even thought that as I was reading your story, before you explained what your coworker told you he'd overheard.

I'm not saying that what you have said doesn't happen to you, but as far as security goes, its more about how you dress and act then the color of your skin. I did loss prevention for a couple of years and the skin color made no difference in who I watched.
