It sucks being a tall, buff good looking rich man with great hair.

Well, I'm not rich but I do have thick luscious hair. I'm running my hands through it right now. MMmmmmmm. Wow - so much hair and not a single sign of balding. I got me some good hair genes

Not all liars do it on purpose though.

Some people who lie, have told/said the lie enough they see it as true and reality. So to them they do not feel they are lying.

Some people believe something is true based on the information they heard and believe them to be facts (Just look at P&N for this alllll the time.) and thus believe it true even though its more projection and only partially true.

Some people cannot be willing to tell the truth and instead use a white lie. Either to spare the feelings for someone, or whatever.

WTF is all this bullshit? Are you trying to tell me you don't believe that burning bush I saw was God? What do you think God knows English? Yiddish? Why would he just come out and say shit when he could light a bush on fire instead? You know, you people sure are fucked up in the head. You see? You see? This is precisely why "Thou shalt not lie with pointy elbowed women" didn't make the list!:colbert:

You had something to hide
Should have hidden it, shouldn't you
Now you're not satisfied
With what you're being put through

It's just time to pay the price
For not listening to advice
And deciding in your youth
On the policy of truth

Things could be so different now
It used to be so civilized
You will always wonder how
It could have been if you'd only lied

It's too late to change events
It's time to face the consequence
For delivering the proof
In the policy of truth

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before
Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

Now you're standing there tongue tied
You'd better learn your lesson well
Hide what you have to hide
And tell what you have to tell
You'll see your problems multiplied
If you continually decide
To faithfully pursue
The policy of truth

Never again
Is what you swore
The time before

WTF was that tripe? A rip-off of the wonderful historical documents known as Star Trek?
What absolute garbage.

(a practiced liar is still a liar...that's how politicians are made. Tell the truth. Don't become a politician.)

!!!! You really should watch the show since you have all that time in your golden years, it's easily one of the better Trek shows out there. It's just great!

Not all politicians are liars, but most seem to be to one degree or another, and for presidents we demand it pretty much on some things.

What's more notable to me is that some are really extreme liars, sort of athletes at it - their job is to 'seem' sincere and honest while saying the biggest whoppers.

People like Michelle Bachmann or Ted Cruz come to mind - take the clip of Bachmann saying Obamacare will kill our minority and elderly citizens, with a tear in her eye.

I can't answer the OP well. There seem to be different types of liars.

One type is the 'serial liar', who seems to lie as if they just can't help themselves - the saying about this type of person is, 'he lied even when he didn't have to'.

Another is the 'greedy liar', who just thinks it's ok. I was reading a yelp review this week by a woman who shamelessly said in the review that every time her and her boyfriend go out to eat, it's their 'anniversary', as that gets them some special treatment by the restaurant. Disgusting.

Yet another is the person who seems to lie as a weakness - to avoid conflict, to get a good response. A mider version is just the 'white lie' to 'not make them feel bad'.

This starts to blur the line with tact.

Let's say you get a present you don't like. The rude response might be 'I don't like that'. The white lie might be 'I love that'. The tact might be 'Thank you so much, I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the gift', while disguising the negative reaction, only commenting on the positive.

OP seems to be talking about the 'serial liar'. It seems some people just get themselves 'wired' as liars, it's a habit and hard to do much about.

One thing I do notice is people tend to project - so liars think and will say, 'everyone lies'. Just as thiefs tend to think and say everyone steals, and so on.

Why lie on ATOT? Because it's the poster child for hidden nerd dreams of earning $100K+ a year and driving an M3. I also think it's stupid, but internet anonymity = higher likelihood of lying.

Importance of a lie is relative, but no one tells the truth 100% of the time. I only worry about the pathological liars since they range from annoying to dangerous.

I'm not even talking about boosting yourself up.

Its stupid stuff like "I fought a ticket and won because the cop didn't calibrate his gun" or "I work for a collection agency so I see people go to jail for not paying debt". Just stupid things that do not do anything but make the poster look like a lying moron. Why even post that?

They're morons, obviously.

Do you count it as lying when you say something ridiculous meant as a joke and someone believes it, so you just go along?

OH hell no. That's good old fashioned fun. We have things like that around the office that are hilarious because they go on for months. Our favorite is "I'll put you at the top of the list!" First...there is no list. There is a stack. And we work off the bottom of the stack :D

I lie all the time deliberately in a sarcastic manner to make fun of people and for entertainment. Anything serious, I just don't bother answering.

I only lie when I'm messing with people. I get a kick out of it....I once convinced a fellow server at a restaurant I used to work at that my dad wanted me to take over the family business. When they asked what it was, I went into a whole thing about growing up in a small fishing village in Norway. I probably talked for 2-3 minutes and kept a straight face......at that time I couldn't even speak norwegian and now I'd get slapped for saying what I know. :D

I lie very rarely, particularly on internet forums. There have been a few times where I was being grilled (usually by the parents) where I lied on the spot for the purpose of self-preservation, but they were mostly justified imo ("What are you doing up this late? Were you watching porn?" "No.")
